Along with increased awareness regarding obesity and its long-term effects, patients have also grown more interested in the option of bariatric surgery as an option to help with weight loss. For the person who is not trained regarding bariatric surgery, the option may seem like an easy way out. It is far from that. Because Palmetto Health has a specialty area concentrated on bariatric surgery options, it is important for a perspective employee to be willing to learn and understand the specific needs of the patients. The interviewer does not expect you to know all of the answers, but having a willingness to understand the patient's needs is vital. Share what you do know with the interviewer.

"I am actually very familiar with the needs of a bariatric patient. After battling obesity and some of the health related complications that go with it, my primary physician gave me the OK to have bariatric surgery myself. It has been one of the most difficult, but well worth it, experiences of my life. Many people do not understand that there is so much more to this than just having a surgery. It requires a lifestyle change, but it can change one's life. Bariatric patients have to watch carbohydrate and sugar intake, consume plenty of protein and make sure to get the recommended amount of vitamins daily. Many people experience hair thinning or loss for a time, but it usually resolves. Also, the one thing I was not prepared for is what we call 'head hunger.' Having this surgery does not cure the cravings. It is really a mind over matter thing. Still, I don't regret having the surgery at all!"
