1.

Tell me about a time when you had to troubleshoot to solve a problem.

Troubleshooting is like reverse engineering - it takes skill, effort and patience. You have to understand the problem in order to know how to work backwards from it to find a solution.

Knowing how to solve problems with technical equipment is always a solid skill, and a great way to demonstrate your example. Show that you are insightful in your approach.

"Last week, while operating the till, I was receiving a repeated error. I entered in a few different codes but that didn't solve the issue. I then did a hard reset, removing all power sources. Then, I referred to the online manual for additional suggestions. It took a little time and patience but I was able to resolve the issue without calling a technician."

"We do not have an IT department in my current office so whenever an issue arises, I am the person that my team calls. Troubleshooting is fun for me - it's like a new challenge every time. Google and IT related forums are often my best friend!"

Do you fully understand what we do at Groupon?

Questions such as these are why it is very important that you research Groupon before your interview. Dive deep into what they do, who their competitors are, who their clients are, and the positive impact their services and products have on their customers. Keep your answer as brief as possible and ask for clarification if you need it.

"From my understanding, the primary service offered by Groupon is XYZ. Your primary customer base is A, B, C. Without your services, most consumers would suffer because of 1, 2, 3. Would you like to provide me with more details on the core of your business?"

"I have conducted a great deal of research before coming here today. I understand quite a lot about Groupon but would love to learn more from you today."

If you had a co-worker call in sick and you were asked to take over their project requiring overtime from you, how would you react? Where do you draw the line when it comes to being a team player?

Show your confidence to your interviewer by explaining your willingness to be part of the team and not being afraid to pick up the slack when needed, but make sure you don’t allow someone to take advantage of you.

"I will always choose to be a team player. If I had a co-worker call in sick, I would take over what I was capable of. The only time I would draw the line would be if I felt I was being taken advantage of. For example, if they were purposefully being inefficient and expecting me to pick up the slack. For the sake of the company, I am always willing to go above and beyond what is expected of me."

"I am always willing to do what it takes for my team to be successful. I have not yet needed to draw boundaries pertaining to this; however, I would likely draw the boundary if I felt that my willingness to help was being taken for granted."

4.

At Groupon we seek to hire those who think outside the box. When was the last time you made a suggestion for workplace improvement? What was the outcome?

The interviewer would like to know if you are an engaged employee; offering suggestions and providing deeper thought when it comes to process improvement in the workplace. Give an example of a time when you made a suggestion for improvement in the workplace. It can be big or small! Did anything great come out of your suggestion?

"Last year I made a recommendation for our office to incorporate a recycling program. We were going through a lot of single-use coffee pods. It bothered me how wasteful it all seemed. I presented a spreadsheet to my supervisor comparing the single-use pods vs. investing in a built-in coffee machine. The savings over 2 years were significant and my boss has now presented my idea to our head office. It feels nice to be heard in the workplace so I continue to keep my eyes out for opportunities for process improvements."

"The last time I made a suggestion for workplace improvement would have been during our last staff meeting. We have a very dated CRM system so I went ahead and researched a few newer and less costly options. I presented my findings in the meeting and the leaders are currently reviewing some options."

5.

We value accountability at Groupon. If a customer sent a formal complaint about an interaction with you, how would you respond?

Assure the interviewer that you are a person of integrity who will take responsibility for any shortcomings in the workplace. Briefly explain to the interviewer that you will handle Groupon customers with great care.

"I understand that Groupon has put a lot of work into building these long term client relationships. If one of your clients complained about my communication with them, I would take full responsibility for my actions and issue an apology. I would also be open to feedback to avoid future incidences. Rest assured, in my 15 years of employment, I have not had any clients complain to my employer about my work ethic or delivery of service."

"Some customers cannot be pleased but I do try my best to make every interaction a positive one. If a customer was unhappy with an interaction with me I would take full accountability and ask them, or my manager, how I could improve. Implementing that change would be the next step."

How do you feel about performance incentives?

Performance incentives can be very motivating. Talk to the interviewer about your feelings re: performance incentives.

"I feel that performance incentives are a great idea. They keep an employee motivated to do a great job and ensure that they are on top of their KPI's. The majority of people are very enthused about being rewarded for their successes."

"I think performance incentives are important for driving people to get results. For me, personally, they give me some skin in the game and get my team engaged in making an impact towards the results."

What leadership qualities do you possess?

Some great qualities of a leader are:

- Being someone who people naturally want to follow
- Exceptional interpersonal skills
- Strong relationship building skills
- Taking ownership for the team's errors and mistakes

"I am best motivated through words of praise and recognition for a job well done. I do like to know that my efforts are being noticed. In my current position we have a leader board and I do like that concept because it creates a healthy bit of personal competition in me as well."

"My biggest take-away from post-secondary education was the level of discipline that I mastered while there. I could multi-task, focus, and think in a completely different way once I had graduated."

Groupon values philanthropy and community giving. How do you choose to give back to others?

The interviewer would like to know that you are socially responsible and a team player - even outside of the workplace. Your answer can be as simple as babysitting your grand-kids every Sunday, to a standing-volunteer gig, to charitable contributions.

"I work a lot but, when I do have free time, I spend that with my grand-kids. It helps to give my son a bit of a break as he is a full time single dad. In addition to this, I volunteer at the local drop-in center every Christmas to help feed the homeless. Giving back is very important to me."

"I agree that community giving is important. I have a regular commitment with our local animal shelter and I also act as a foster home for displaced animals, when the shelter is experiencing overflow. It's easy for me because I am an animal lover but it's also really rewarding to do something kind. Can you tell me more about the philanthropic efforts of Groupon?"

Tell me about a time when you were unable to meet a project deadline. How did you react?

Nobody is perfect! The interviewer knows that there will be times when deadlines are not met, and projects go sideways. What they really want to know is - how do you react? Are you someone who will have a workplace temper tantrum or are you the type to keep plugging away, despite the perceived failure?

Perhaps you simply underestimated the depth of the project or maybe you faced a distraction at work. Whatever the situation was, discuss what you learned from the outcome. Show the interviewer that you do not have a defeatist mentality.

"Last month I missed a project deadline primarily because I underestimated the need for support staff on the project. Despite working overtime, I missed the deadline by 3 days. When I realized that the deadline would not be met, I called the client and apologized. I did take full accountability for the inconvenience and met the second deadline that I promised the client."

"We once fell behind in a project due to testing on a new service. I reacted by quickly rearranging schedules and identifying our earliest possible completion to inform our supervisors and customers."

When have you shown a willingness to learn a new method or new approach to solving a problem?

It is a great skill to have when you are able to approach a problem in a new way. Discuss with the interviewer your ability to approach a problem using new methods.

"When our company came under new management last year there were many new methods and policies that came into place. I was able to learn many new approaches to our challenges in sales, and customer management. I quite enjoyed the process."

"I am always willing to learn new techniques and problem solving methods! In my most recent position I requested to attend a workshop at our local college that included dispute resolution and other customer service techniques. I learned a lot there and was able to implement my new approach almost immediately."

13.

How many days were you absent from work last year?

A part of being a diligent employee is to ensure that you are always on time and present when expected. It's great to even be 10 minutes early rather than just showing up right on the dot. Talk to the interviewer about your attendance.

"I had zero unexcused absences last year. In total, I took 12 vacation days out of my 15 allotted days. I was sick just 2 and those were accompanied by a note from my Doctor. Once I was late due to a terrible snow storm and I always try to be 10 minutes early for my shift."

"I cannot recall the exact number but I think it was around 3 days total. All absences were excused and with notice."

14.

Considering your background is in an industry different from ours, what skills and characteristics do you have that qualify you for this position in this industry?

There are many ways that you can be a fit for a position, even though you do not come with direct industry experience. Think about the variety of skills that you have and how those can benefit another employer, despite the industry. These are your transferable skills and they can include sales abilities, customer service experience, and software skills.

"Although my background is not in your precise industry, I have worked with many clients who have been in your industry. I bring excellent transferable skills that qualify me for this position. These skills include my advanced abilities in Excel, my outstanding cold-calling abilities as well as my proven background in team leadership."

At Groupon we provide products and services to a wide range of customers. Are you prepared to deal with a variety of personalities?

In the consumer services industry, your experience with clients may be widespread. Talk to the interviewer about the range of personalities you have been exposed to. Be sure to appear confident in your ability to handle a wide variety of personalities.

"The majority of my work experience is with a wide range of clients and personalities. Happy customers are always the easiest to deal with; however, I do have some training in conflict management. I am confident in my ability to successfully and professionally handle the range of customers that shop at Groupon."

"In my current position I work with a large variety of personalities in the form of clients and co-workers. I believe that this diversity is what makes life interesting!
