Question 1 of 33

Our ideal program manager is collaborative, accountable, organized, and customer obsessed. How would you rate yourself in these areas?

"I am a naturally collaborative person. I learn best in a group setting, and I think best by talking things over with others. I enjoy hearing the perspectives of others and facilitating discussions to drive out ideas and weave them together. I am a formally trained facilitator and I am good at creating comfortable team environments where collaboration can take place. I would rate myself high in this area.

Accountability is something I have learned to be better at and appreciate over the years. I have found that fostering vulnerability within teams really goes a long way toward helping people be accountable. I try to set an example of my willingness to be accountable for my own work as early as possible when working with new teams. I also make it a regular part of the process to reflect often so that it becomes a normal part of what we do as teams as opposed to something we only do when we need to answer for our mistakes. I would also rate myself high in this area.

Organization is an area I have to really push myself to focus on. I appreciate and lean on many type-A behaviors, but I have a lot of type B traits. I usually ensure that all of my work that affects others is highly organized, but it is normal to see chaotic-looking notes on my desk or an inbox with a bunch of uncategorized emails.

I am customer obsessed, but I am also team obsessed. I am a believer in a healthy balance between the two. I ask my teams to understand their customer personas and work hard to develop value on their behalf. I also ask my customers to understand when I need to say 'no', or 'not yet' in situations where pushing my team would lead to a poor outcome for everyone."
