"I know that City of Hope values integrity and emphasizes doing the right thing to ensure patient safety. I once was in a patient room with another colleague, and this patient was a two-person assist with a gait belt. We had several other patients with their call lights on needing help, and we could not locate the patient's gait belt in her room, so my colleague suggested we lift her under the arms ourselves to save time. It was tempting because so many other patients also needed our help. However, I reminded her that it was unsafe for the patient, and I went to the nurse's desk to find a spare gait belt. It's important to do the right thing and not take shortcuts, especially when patient safety is at stake."

"In my previous role, we had a double-check system in place when passing medication to patients. We were short-staffed, and several patients were past due for their pain medicine. It would have saved time and provided relief to our patients if we cut out that second check, but it also posed a great risk to the patient by removing that second safety, so I advocated that we not even consider that solution. I was able to call another staff member from another floor of the facility to come provide additional support until we could get caught up on the medication passing."
