Giving Your Letter of Resignation

A HOW-TO GUIDE WITH TEMPLATES

Leaving your job can be a confusing experience. You might feel excited to move on but also tentative, sad, or anxious at the same time.

Resigning from your company is a big change, and it's normal to feel a range of emotions. Thankfully, with the right resignation plan, your transition can feel much more controlled and less stressful.

Common Questions About Resignations

01.

What is the purpose of a formal resignation letter?

02.

Why is it important to give notice?

03.

Can I just give verbal notice to my employer?

Job Resignation Tips

1

Before submitting your resignation, double-check your employment contract for any terms and obligations. Typical employment contracts will ask for two weeks' notice.

2

Give your letter of resignation to the person you report to. You should also provide a copy to your Human Resources representative.

3

If you have a good relationship with your direct leader, consider informing them of your plan to leave before submitting your formal resignation letter.

4

If you are providing your resignation via email, keep a copy iny our personal email account. This way, you can always access the communication after you've left the company.

note

Your employer may have policies around notice periods.

Be aware that if you have access to sensitive information such as key contacts or business financials, you may be asked to leave immediately after providing notice. Depending on your employment contract, you may be eligible for pay in lieu of notice.
