  1. 1.

What does delegation mean to you?

      How to Answer

Delegation is an essential management skill, definitely one of the very most important. The interviewer wants to know if understand the importance of delegation and whether or not it's something you're capable of doing effectively.

"I believe that delegation is an essential management skill. It's a manager's job to delegate and to supervise that delegation; it's not possible - or desirable - to do everything yourself single-handedly. You have to weigh up how long it will take to explain to someone else how to undertake the task by comparison to how long it would take to just do it yourself. Small one-off tasks are typically best done yourself but lengthier tasks - or tasks which are likely to need to be repeated in the future - are often best delegated."

"Delegation is splitting up a large goal into smaller tasks in a way that people are comfortable with the role they have, and the work is split up equally among individuals. Delegation gives freedom to people to learn new roles to advance their knowledge. Also, it means having trust and confidence in other people to perform their functions without micromanaging."

"To me, it means knowing your team and their strengths, knowing that one person doesn't have to take on the full responsibility of a task, and the majority of the time, its more useful to have team members assigned their personal duties."

      Rachelle's Answer

This is a good explanation of delegation. Nice perspective!

"It is a crucial part of running a successful team. No veterinary clinic can be run by one person, so jobs must be prioritized and dealt with in a logical order. Tasks should be delegated to the most appropriate person for them. This allows everyone in the team to complete their task successfully, and the operation at hand can be completed quicker and at a high standard."

      Rachelle's Answer

Very nice approach! When we delegate to people's strengths, projects will run much more smoothly.

"To me, delegation is in every essence vital to prioritize animal welfare in a veterinary setting. Sometimes, the veterinary career can get overly demanding and intense. This can be deleterious to the vet's mental health, resulting in passion fatigue and exhaustion that can be, in turn, deleterious to the animals under their care. Therefore, delegation is such an important skill, since you can ask your veterinary team for support, allowing you to both care for yourself and the animals. A good example of my delegation skills is that as a board member of my school's medical society, it is necessary for me to delegate responsibilities out to people so that we can enjoy working in the medical society, as well as keeping up to date with our school work."

      Rachelle's Answer

It's great that you include your idea of delegation, why proper delegation matters, what that looks like in a veterinarian setting, and how you exude this skill as a student. Well said, and a very in-depth response!

"What delegation means to me is when a manager or boss will assign duties to other employees. I feel that delegation is important because one person can not achieve everything. Therefore, functions that need to be done may use different skill sets. This is why it is a great way to give individuals various assignments with different skill sets so everyone can work together as a team to reach a common goal."

      Rachelle's Answer

Fantastic perspective, highlighting the importance of delegating to everyone's strengths.

"Delegation is a skill that is important in the professional world. One individual cannot do everything, and this is an essential skill that one should have to get tasks done. At the clinic, I currently work for, the doctors and office manager delegate responsibilities to the assistant and technicians so that they can put more effort into larger aspects of their jobs. In my work-place, if delegation did not exist, nothing would ever get done."

      Rachelle's Answer

Fantastic answer! It's great that you not only define delegation, but you also discuss how it impacts your current place of work.

"Delegation is the process of assigning jobs to others. It is an essential skill in veterinary medicine because you need to be able to work efficiently with colleagues by splitting up larger jobs into smaller tasks that can be completed by multiple individuals to get things done more quickly. For example, in the operating theatre, a surgeon will have veterinary technicians who are responsible for passing certain equipment. These roles would have been delegated by the vet before surgery."

      Rachelle's Answer

You describe the concept of delegation very well. I like that you relate delegation and what it means to you by using veterinary work as your example.
