How to Answer
A potential employer will often base their offer on your current salary. You should be transparent about your most recent earnings and be prepared to back up any salary requests.

"I am currently earning a base salary of $78,000 plus a car allowance of $900/month and health benefits. I am looking for a competitive salary in my next position."

In some states, it is now illegal for employers to ask about your current salary, so I suggest researching this is your area before answering this question. Usually, I suggest providing a range without your target hiring bracket, rather than an exact salary, if pushed for a number. For example: "I am seeking compensation that is aligned with the requirements of the role and provides an opportunity for growth; currently, my target salary range is $55,000-65,000. Are you able to share if this is within the range for this position?
