YouTube Interview Questions

  1. 1.

YouTube has over 1.8 billion monthly users. How do you think we can attract an even larger customer base?

YouTube wants to continue to hold the majority of the market when it comes to subscribers and streaming services. The interviewer is interested in seeing if you have any unique ideas for gaining an even larger subscriber base. Tap into your creative thinking and suggest how you think YouTube could grow larger.

      Rachelle's Answer

"In the case of YouTube, where you have so many subscribers and monthly users already, I feel that a great focus could be on expanding the spend of those 1.8 billion, rather than zeroing in on new customers. The ones who are already loyal may benefit from other services such as third-party content sales, or podcast streaming."

      Rachelle's Answer

"YouTube is by far the giant when it comes to video content streaming and on-demand services. To attract an even larger customer base, I would recommend having content that is searchable by language, and then advertising to countries where YouTube may not be as prominent."

  2. 2.

What are your thoughts on the way media is rated for the public (IE: PG, 14A, NR, Mature)?

Media ratings have changed a great deal over the years, and the interviewer would like to know your thoughts on this. Be sure to keep your answer productive and thoughtful.

      Rachelle's Answer

"Media ratings have most definitely loosened over the years. What used to be rated 14A is now often classified as PG. I feel this is because our kids and youth are exposed to so much more now than we ever were as kids and we are becoming desensitized. I do wish that some guidelines would remain tighter, especially surrounding violent content."

      Rachelle's Answer

"Because I am newer to this industry, I would need to conduct more analysis on media ratings before I could give you a fully researched answer. With that said, I feel that the majority of media I am exposed to seem to be rated adequately, and clearly. I think it's important for viewers and consumers to easily see ratings before making their decision on whether or not it's appropriate for them."

  3. 3.

Why would a viewer choose YouTube over other companies offering video streaming services?

The hiring authority wants to know that you understand what sets YouTube apart from their competitors. The way you answer this question will show the interviewer how much research you have conducted on YouTube before your interview. Discuss what edge YouTube has on their competitors, highlighting exactly why you believe streaming customers should use YouTube as their first choice.

      Rachelle's Answer

"I feel that a consumer should choose YouTube over other companies for video streaming services because you are often first-to-market with popular content since your content is user-generated and most users think to upload to YouTube first. I trust that YouTube will always have what I am looking for, plus it's effortless to search for videos and then view other similar content with your auto-play and recommended videos features."

      Rachelle's Answer

"Not only is your user platform very convenient, but I also find that YouTube has content that not everyone seems to get because it is primarily user-generated. I believe exclusive and original content is one of the biggest competitive edges a media company can gain these days."

  4. 4.

Tell me about your experience collaborating with marketing, content, and design teams.

The hiring authority is looking for details on your experience when it comes to cross-departmental collaboration. In online media, it takes many passes through many hands to complete a project so, it's essential to YouTube that you can work well with other people through a variety of departments. Give an example of how you collaborate with a diverse team in your current role.

      Rachelle's Answer

"In my current role we have a staff of 450 people within ten departments. Any given week, I will collaborate with marketing, sales, human resources, and IT. These are the departments with which I collaborate most often. I believe that everyone has a great deal of value to offer, so, for that reason, I embrace every opportunity to collaborate cross-departmentally."

      Rachelle's Answer

"I look forward to getting to know the YouTube marketing, content, and design teams. Currently, in my internship, I have spent two weeks in each department, getting to know the ins and outs of publishing, design, marketing, sales, and even public relations. The experience has been invaluable."

  5. 5.

How do you think video-on-demand services are affecting the media advertising industry?

The interviewer would like to see that you have insight when it comes to the video streaming industry, and how it's changing the way companies advertise. Raymond James, a financial services firm, conducted an extensive survey in 2017 showing that 40% of people asked, said they choose video streaming over traditional television, to avoid commercials. This statistic indicates that video streaming has a massive impact on the advertising industry. Give a thoughtful response, showing to the interviewer that you have a keen interest in what's happening in the world of media, today.

      Rachelle's Answer

"I believe that video-on-demand services are hugely affecting the media advertising industry. People have changed how they consume media, and advertisers have had to adapt. I look at YouTube, and your 15-second ads played before loading a video. Consumers now watch commercials on mobile and social networking sites versus on television between episodes of their favorite sitcom. Advertisers have had to make a significant pivot over the last few years, leaving those unwilling to adapt, in the dust."

      Rachelle's Answer

"I believe that the convenience of video-on-demand has made people impatient when it comes to how they digest advertising. The quick 3 second blurbs we see now, on social networking sites, mean that advertisers have to be incredibly sharp in their messaging. I think this is a great change, ensuring that advertisers spend their dollars wisely, getting the best message out to consumers in as short of time as possible."

  6. 6.

What are your 3 favorite forms of entertainment?

The interviewer would like to know the types of media and entertainment that you enjoy consuming regularly. Talk to the interviewer about your favorite forms of entertainment and be sure to include why they are your top choice.

      Rachelle's Answer

"My favorite forms of entertainment have always been reality tv, podcasts, celebrity-based news and, of course, watching YouTube videos! It is so easy to go down the 'YouTube rabbit hole' as I call it, and kill hours watching highly entertaining content."

      Rachelle's Answer

"There are so many great forms of entertainment media available to us. I am more traditional and would say that my favorite forms still include print media, documentaries, and podcasts that focus on economics and business. I have started subscribing to a variety of YouTube channels related to business and finance, which has been a very welcome change in my content consumption repertoire."

  7. 7.

What are your thoughts on illegal streaming websites?

YouTube is tough on piracy, and they want to know your thoughts on websites that offer illegal or pirated content. Take note if YouTube has an anti-pirating team, or other focused efforts to ensure that their content is 100% above board. Show the interviewer that you are tough on piracy and that you agree with the actions the company is taking to fight the theft of copyrighted material.

      Rachelle's Answer

"I think that illegal streaming websites are a major problem and a completely unacceptable way to find and consume content online. If hired to work at YouTube I would do everything possible to help your anti-piracy team make headway."

      Rachelle's Answer

"Piracy is a growing problem, and I fully support every effort that YouTube puts towards anti-piracy and the theft of copyrighted content."

  8. 8.

How do you keep up-to-date on new technologies and trends in this industry?

One way that a potential employer will gauge 'fit' is by ensuring that you are passionate about your particular industry. Show the interviewer that you are passionate about your industry by openly discussing how you stay on top of industry trends.

      Rachelle's Answer

"I keep up to date on new technologies and trends through a variety of sources. I follow the TED blog so that I can learn from industry leaders as well as read multiple articles online per week. My favorite resource at the moment is Streaming Media Magazine. I am also very open to new suggestions!"

      Rachelle's Answer

"Of course, the official YouTube blog is in my repertoire, as is Mashable and The Verge. I also keep up on new trends in this industry by taking additional coursework online, whenever possible."

  9. 9.

Describe to me the types of digital media you are most experienced with.

There are a plethora of digital media forms today, and the interviewer would like a breakdown of the ones with which you are most familiar. Some types of digital media include images, video, gamification of many kinds, social media, websites, online channels, and more. Speak to the forms of digital media you are most experienced with while being sure to address the types listed in the YouTube job description.

      Rachelle's Answer

"In my current role, I work primarily with online channels such as YouTube and IGTV, creating video content. I also have experience working on projects related to gamification ads. I saw in the YouTube job posting that you were looking for someone with in-depth knowledge with gamification ads for marketing. I would rate my knowledge in this area an 8 out of 10, leaving me very confident that I would meet your requirements."

      Rachelle's Answer

"While completing my degree in Digital Marketing, I learned a great deal about digital media production and design for video and web platforms. Most of my experience is with creating compelling video ads, and shorts for use online and on social media."

  10. 10.

What expertise do you bring in digital KPIs and analytics?

Be prepared to discuss with the interviewer the types of digital KPIs and analytics you are accustomed to tracking. Some critical KPIs in the world of digital content creation may include analytics around reach; including unique visits. Engagement rates; including time spent on your page, ad, or video. You may also look at the number of engaged comments or social sharing rates. Talk to the interviewer about the KPIs that you currently work with, and why you believe they are essential to track.

      Rachelle's Answer

"In my current role, the numbers that I care about the most include our sentiment rates. I look at the number of comments and engagement. I like to see soaring numbers when it comes to social media shares or @ tags. Nothing feels as great as seeing your digital content go viral, and I look forward to achieving more of that in my career with YouTube."

      Rachelle's Answer

"When it comes to digital KPIs, my current employer puts a significant focus on social sharing and engaged comments. When digital content is good, viewers will quickly share without hesitation. When engagement rates are high, it's a quick indicator that your content is on point."

  11. 11.

What is the most important KPI for an advertising client?

Advertising clients look at a multitude of KPIs when they invest in advertising efforts. When it comes to digital, some crucial factors are:

      - Click-Through Rates (CTR)
      - Cost Per Action (CPA)
      - Conversion Rate
      - Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC)

...and many more! Then, when it comes to print or traditional advertising, the KPIs change slightly, and there is more focus placed on things like response rates. Discuss with the interviewer what you believe to be the most important KPI for an advertising client.

      Rachelle's Answer

"I believe that the most important KPI for an advertising client is the Conversion Rate. The entire reason we launch effective advertising campaigns is to gain a larger customer base. Other KPIs are significant; however, I believe the Conversion Rate to be the most important one."

      Rachelle's Answer

"In my opinion, sales revenue it the true indicator of an advertising campaigns efficacy. Every advertising client should be able to know and understand if their inbound marketing campaign has brought them more business."

  12. 12.

How has on-demand video streaming changed the way you consume content?

The interviewer is curious how often you stream content versus using more traditional broadcasting methods to consume your content. Share how the introduction of on-demand video streaming has changed the way you watch your favorite shows, look for videos, and even how you pay attention to media advertising.

      Rachelle's Answer

"I watch a lot of on-demand video streaming through sources such as YouTube, Netflix, and IGTV. I believe that on-demand video streaming saves me a lot of time as it's now effortless to search for, and find, the videos that I want to watch. I also find that I pay more attention to ads since they are more interesting and relevant than many of the ads seen on television."

      Rachelle's Answer

"On-demand video streaming certainly simplifies life; however, it puts me on my device more than ever. I like to consume content in smaller bits now, but that also means picking up my phone or tablet more often during the day. I think that streaming reduces the time I spend watching commercials, but the ads that I do see are much more targeted and relevant to me."

  13. 13.

What would you consider your technical specialty, and how does it relate to this job with YouTube?

Think about your particular areas of interest or ability. Talk to the interviewer about your strengths and be sure to highlight any specific skills that you excel in. It's a great idea, if you can, to highlight particular skills listed on the YouTube job description. If there is a related area of interest where you'd like to expand your capabilities, you can mention those as well.

      Rachelle's Answer

I see that you are looking for team members who are experts in network communications, which is what caught my eye when I first saw your job posting."

      Rachelle's Answer

"I have been focusing my career on mastering JavaScript and Node ecosystems, and I do have cross-platform app development expertise as well."

  14. 14.

What do you know about the part that AI and Machine Learning play when it comes to on-demand video streaming?

Artificial intelligence and machine learning are both very hot topics in technology, and the hiring authority would like to see awareness when it comes to what's happening in the world of AI and how it relates to on-demand video streaming. Some options for answering this question include referring to a press release by YouTube, discussing how they embrace AI technology to improve their services. You could also answer this question by talking about a topic you recently researched, or a news article you read on this topic.

      Rachelle's Answer

"I recently attended the National Association of Broadcasters show in Las Vegas where I was able to get an insiders' peek at how AI and machine learning are forming streaming services. One of the factors that stood out to me is the fact that AI helps greatly with precise content curation. This assistance is not limited to on-demand video streaming but also more traditional forms of broadcasting, media, and entertainment."

      Rachelle's Answer

"I have been reading up on AI technology and how it is affecting streaming media. I was fascinated to learn all about how machine learning helps with predicting customer behavior, allowing companies to save money by making educated and pointed advertising efforts the first time."

  15. 15.
