Shoppers Drug Mart Interview Questions

  1. 1.

Tell me about a time you suggested a change about an organization to your employer.

At Shoppers Drug Mart, we are constantly innovating with first-to-market initiatives that exceed our customers' expectations. We're always striving to be on the cutting edge, and we're not afraid to try new things. That's why we empower all of our employees to let us know about any suggestions they have on ways that we could improve. Have you ever suggested a change at work? How was your idea received? What was the result?

      Jordan's Answer #1

"When I first started working at my current job, I noticed that our waste levels were through the roof, and there was no system in place for recycling or reusing items. I did some research after work on local recycling programs, and then I came up with an idea to create a friendly competition with my coworkers to see who could recycle the most every quarter. I came up with a points and rewards system, then took the idea to my manager. She was thrilled with the idea and gave me ownership of the project, and we started seeing our waste levels go down dramatically. I think it brought us all closer as a team, too."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"I'm really glad to hear that Shoppers values the opinions and ideas of all of its employees. I've worked for retailers in the past who were not at all interested in innovating or changing the status quo -- so I've never felt comfortable coming forward with an idea before. I'm a creative problem-solver, so I have a lot of ideas, and I'm happy to know that there's a format at Shoppers to bring my ideas to my manager when it's appropriate."

  2. 2.

    Do you have reliable transportation?

Even if you're not expected to drive for the job, you will need to have some form of reliable transportation. If you take the bus or ride a bike, that works too! Merely share that you have the means to get to work consistently and on time.

      Jordan's Answer #1

"I have reliable transportation. I have a well-maintained vehicle, and I am comfortable with the amount of travel required to get to your office every day."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"I take public transit; however, I find it to be very reliable. I was late to work only once last year, and that was due to a snowstorm which stalled all of our employee's commute - including those with personal vehicles. Rest assured, I am reliable and will always come to work on time."

  3. 3.

We need reliable people on our team at Shoppers Drug Mart. How many days were you absent from work last year?

A part of being a diligent employee is to ensure that you are always on time and present when expected. It's great to even be 10 minutes early rather than just showing up right on the dot. Talk to the interviewer about your attendance.

      Jordan's Answer #1

"I had zero unexcused absences last year. In total, I took 12 vacation days out of my 15 allotted days. I was sick just 2, and a note from my Doctor accompanied those. Once I was late due to a terrible snow storm, and I always try to be 10 minutes early for my shift."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"I am very committed to my employer and am only absent in events of sickness or the odd family emergency. I do my best always to be available and present when expected."

  4. 4.

Personality fit is important to us at Shoppers Drug Mart. How would you describe your personality?

At Shoppers Drug Mart, we value the different perspective, experiences, and contributions available from our sales associates, and we encourage employees to celebrate their different personalities and learn from each other. Talk to the interviewer about your personality and what you would add to the team here.

      Jordan's Answer #1

"I'm a very compassionate, open-hearted person -- I think that's really my foundational personality trait. I show a lot of empathy to customers and coworkers because I genuinely care about them. I tend to make connections with people very quickly, and so I'm invested in their health and well-being. That's the primary thing I would add to the Shoppers team."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"I am confident, friendly, and a go-getter. Are these personality traits that you are looking for in your next hire?"

  5. 5.

Have you researched our company values? What makes you the best candidate for Shoppers Drug Mart?

The Shoppers Drug Mart vision is 'to be the leader in helping Canadians discover a healthier outlook on life,' and our values support our work to achieve this goal: we're accountable to each other and to the business, we're responsible for our world and our environment, and we're dedicated to the health of all Canadians. Which of these values stands out to you most? How would you embody the values and vision of Shoppers Drug Mart in your role here?

      Jordan's Answer #1

"Dedication to the environment is one of my own personal values, so it makes me feel really good to know that Shoppers Drug Mart makes care for the environment a priority, too. I would embody this value by gaining product knowledge about the green products we sell and relaying this information to our customers. I think well-informed consumers are the key to a better world."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"I like that Shoppers values accountability between coworkers, between employees and supervisors, and between the company as a whole and the communities they serve. I think it's important for a company to be transparent and ethically responsible. It's easy to make accountability a priority at work; I would do that at Shoppers by working diligently and with integrity."

  6. 6.

Working in a retail environment, you will sometimes come across rude customers. How would you handle a customer who is rude towards you or a co-worker?

At Shoppers Drug Mart, our customers are often in our store to purchase prescriptions and over the counter drugs to help them overcome illnesses, from the common cold to more serious health issues. The stress of illness can sometimes naturally lead to rude behavior on the part of the customer, but we expect our store associates to treat every customer with respect. Talk to the interviewer about how you respond when a customer is rude to you.

      Jordan's Answer #1

"I'm a really empathetic person, so my first reaction to a rude customer is to wonder what's going on beneath the surface -- I truly believe that most people don't start their day planning to be rude or unkind to others. I don't let rudeness phase me; usually, when a customer is rude to me, I respond with even more hospitality and kindness. I think it shows that customer that we care about them, and it shows any other customers who see the interaction that we really value and respect each of our customers."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"Rude customers don't bother me. I know that sometimes people just have a bad day and will lash out at whoever is closest. If a customer is rude to me directly, I just smile and continue to offer the same great service, and I'll give them a bit more space as well so they don't feel pressured."

  7. 7.

Take me through your career experience, including any experience in retail. What was the most challenging position you have held? Which was your favorite, and why?

For a retail role, it's always preferable that applicants have some retail experience, but that's not a requirement. The management team at Shoppers Drug Mart is more interested in your ability to provide great customer service and uphold the values of the company. Talk to the interviewer about how your career experience has prepared you for a retail position with Shoppers.

      Jordan's Answer #1

"I've only been working in retail for about six months, and so far I'm really happy that I made the transition into this industry. Before that, I was working in an IT support call center, where I learned plenty about excellent customer service and explaining complicated solutions over the phone, but I was really tired of the sedentary, isolated nature of the work. Making the transition to retail was difficult because I wasn't used to being on my feet all day or talking to customers in person, but I caught on really quickly, and now I love it."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"I have worked in retail for the past eight years. My most challenging position was with Company ABC. I found it so challenging because it was a different industry than I was accustomed. I learned a great deal during that time. This position was also my favorite because it was such a great challenge. I like to be pushed beyond my boundaries. It keeps me motivated to be better."

  8. 8.

Tell me about a time that you disagreed with a supervisor.

We've worked hard to build a strong, healthy environment for our workers in our Shoppers Drug Mart stores. We believe that great teams are built around strong communication and an open exchange of ideas between mutually respectful parties. That's why we allow space for disagreements between managers and associates -- disagreements don't have to turn into arguments as long as everyone is respectful and kind. Have you ever had a disagreement with a supervisor? How did you approach that situation?

      Jordan's Answer #1

"For a long time, I was really afraid of approaching any supervisor about ideas or concerns I had that went against what they were saying, but recently I was in a situation where I really had an ethical problem with a decision that was made by my manager. I thought about it for a couple of days, and then I asked her if we could have a short meeting to discuss it. I told her about my concerns and the problems I had with her decision, and she was very gracious about it. She said she hadn't considered the situation from my perspective and was grateful that I had come directly to her to discuss it."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"I was recently helping my manager reorganize the sales floor because we were set to install a huge new in-store display the next day, and we had a disagreement about how to approach the reorganization. We're both pretty stubborn people, but we've worked together for a long time and respect each other. We laughed off the tension, took a breath, and talked about our different ideas. We ended up combining our strategies and it worked out great!"

  9. 9.

Why is this job at Shoppers Drug Mart right for you at this time in your career?

At Shoppers Drug Mart, working with our Associate-Owners offers you significant training opportunities, from learning how to better perform in your current role to gaining skills that will help you take your career to the next level. Talk to the interviewer about your career goals and how this position at Shoppers will prepare you to meet those goals.

      Jordan's Answer #1

"I'm looking to lay the foundation for the rest of my career with this position. Someday, I really hope to return to school and earn a Pharm.D so that I can become a full-time pharmacist. I hope that my experience as a sales associate at Shoppers will set me up for future success in my field as I learn more about serving customers in this setting."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"I've been in retail for a few years now, and I really love it. I never knew that I would want to build a career in retail, but now I can't imagine working in any other industry! I'm at the point in my career where I'm trying to determine what sector of retail I'm really interested in, but I know that I would love to be a store manager someday. I have natural leadership and managerial skills, and I'm hoping that those skills will only grow stronger as I learn more about the Shoppers way and build upon my experience."

  10. 10.

What draws you to a job at a pharmacy retailer? In what area do you think you'd be most useful?

Since its founding in Toronto in 1962, Shoppers Drug Mart has prided itself on its extraordinary sales associates who support the work of the pharmacists and managers. But we're not just a pharmacy: we offer services in health, beauty, and convenient food items. What makes you interested in working for a retailer like Shoppers? What department of the store do you think you would be best suited for?

      Jordan's Answer #1

"I really enjoy caring for people, and I know that the target customer for a store like Shoppers are Canadians who are involved in caring for their own health issues or the issues of those they love. I enjoy being in an environment where I can bring some light into someone's day, especially if they're going through a hard time. I think that I'm well-suited for the pace of a job like this, and I'm definitely excited about the possibility of caring for customers in really proactive ways."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"I'm really interested in the beauty industry and have experience with a lot of the products you carry in your store. I think I'd do my best work in the Beauty department -- I really believe that great beauty can be had at affordable prices, and I want customers to know that they don't have to go to an expensive, fancy retailer to get the products they need to be their most beautiful selves."

  11. 11.

How do you handle situations that could cause you to be late or miss work?

Proper planning will get you far, but sometimes life happens, and you'll need a plan B. Think about some of the variables in your life that could affect your ability to arrive on time for work. Sick children, traffic, car breakdowns... the list goes on. It may not be possible for everything to work out so smoothly, getting your shift covered or still making it to work on time. Your interviewer is looking to see that you are proactive and that you can handle the stress of unexpected situations that can arise.

      Jordan's Answer #1

"I always give myself an extra time-buffer when I leave for work in case something catches me by surprise. That way, I'm not stressed out if something happens because I've already planned for it in advance. The extra time I build into getting to work will give me time to contact my manager if I get delayed -- and if nothing else, it never hurts to arrive to work early!"

      Jordan's Answer #2

"I hope never to be late! When I started working at a restaurant at sixteen years old, we were taught the adage of 'if you're on time, you're late,' so I've worked to implement that into my life. I always try to arrive 15 minutes early, but there are unforeseen circumstances that can arise. I handle surprises using common sense and keeping courtesy to others top of mind."

  12. 12.

How can Shoppers Drug Mart motivate you on the job?

Shoppers Drug Mart is truly interested in the input and opinions of its employees in every area of the organization, and working with our Associate-Owners will offer you significant training opportunities and motivation on the job. Talk to the interviewer about ways that you stay motivated at work and how Shoppers can contribute to your motivation.

      Jordan's Answer #1

"I am best motivated through words of praise and recognition for a job well done. I do like to know that my efforts are noticed. In my current position, we have a leaderboard and I do like that concept because it creates a healthy bit of personal competition for me as well."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"I am very much self-driven and self-motivated. As long as I am being treated with respect and feel appreciated, you will get the best work from me."

  13. 13.

Describe to me your ideal employer.

From our Love.You. Women's Health Initiative to our dedication to energy efficiency and diversity, there's a lot to love about a job at Shoppers Drug Mart. What kinds of companies get your attention? What are you looking for in an employer?

      Jordan's Answer #1

"I've read a little bit about the Love.You. initiative, and I'm so impressed! I'm really passionate about women's health, so it's important to me that my employer takes active steps to encourage women to take ownership of their health and wellness. It's such an important program, and I would be happy to work for a company that's so proactive in the lives of its female customers."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"I can't work for a company that isn't doing it's part to protect and nurture our natural world -- in this day and age, with the amount of information we have about climate change, there's just no excuse for business practices that do further harm to the environment. That's why I'm so happy that Shoppers is doing so much to reduce their waste. I especially love that they carry green product lines like BioLife and Nativa Organics. I could rest easy at night working for a company like Shoppers."

  14. 14.

What type of work environment do you dislike working in?

The fast pace and ever-changing nature of a retail environment like Shoppers Drug Mart isn't for everyone, and we want to make sure that this is the right fit for you. Talk to the interviewer about any environments you have had a hard time with in the past.

      Jordan's Answer #1

"I have a hard time in stationary, isolated roles because I'm a really outgoing, friendly, active person. I like to be on my feet and interacting with people all day long. I get bored easily, so it's important that I always have something to do, which is why the retail industry is such a good fit for me!"

      Jordan's Answer #2

"I do best in a supportive environment where there is room to grow, the ability to ask questions, and healthy co-worker relationships."

  15. 15.

How do you handle a situation where your supervisor does not properly communicate information to you?

Strong communication skills are key to accomplishing store tasks and building a strong team, but miscommunication still happens between managers and team members from time to time. Talk to the interviewer about how you approached a situation where miscommunication happened between you and a supervisor. What did you learn from that situation?

      Jordan's Answer #1

"When I was hired at my current job, my manager had miscommunicated the length of my first training shift: she had told me two hours in her email, but when I arrived I quickly realized I was expected to stay much longer. Unfortunately, I had to get to my other job, so I talked to the manager about it directly without accusing her of the miscommunication -- I told her I must have misunderstood her expectations. She let me go to my other job, and when I came back for my next shift she told me that she had reread our email exchange and apologized for the miscommunication."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"I have had great supervisors in my previous positions; however, if faced with a communication challenge like this, I would ask the supervisor how I could improve communication between us. Rather than placing blame, I believe it's always more effective to ask for growth recommendations."
