"I understand that Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has put a lot of work into building these long-term client relationships. If one of your clients complained about my communication with them, I would take full responsibility for my actions and issue an apology. I would also be open to feedback to avoid future incidences. Rest assured, in my 15 years of employment, I have not had any clients complain to my employer about my work ethic or delivery of service."

If appropriate, I would of course apologize for the interaction, and follow up with a supervising manager to see if I was indeed acting in an unacceptable manner and how I could prevent that kind of behavior or demeanor in the future. That feedback would guide how I proceed with trying to mend my relationship with the customer.

Stephanie's Feedback
This response really highlights your ability to be self-reflective and open to feedback, which is so important in every place of employment. You may wish to add a closing sentence that reflects a bit more about your perspective on the importance of accountability at work. For example, "I set expectations for myself and I'm consistently open to feedback," or "When I make a mistake at work, I want to learn from it so I can improve for the future."
Prepare for technical depth and security protocols that national laboratory interviewers expect.
