"One thing I have always had difficulty with is time management. I have often overestimated how much extra time I have and take on more responsibility than I'm able to. This leads to me feeling overwhelmed. Over the last several years, I've begun using more organizational tools. I use Google Calendar to schedule my time and make daily checklists to ensure I'm prioritizing my tasks well. I also have students use a scheduling tool to schedule office hours with me. I quickly learned that I wasn't going to have as much time as I thought, and instead of saying this early on, I tried to balance all of the classes. Ultimately, many of my students struggled because I wasn't able to put as much thought into my lessons and didn't have the time to provide extra help. I had many students barely get through their course, and looking back, I wish I had have spoken up about not being able to balance my time earlier on and asked for help. While I was used to adapting for a few students, this was different. Almost every student needed a new way to be taught. All of the students said they felt like they couldn't understand the information through lectures and needed more tangible examples. I decided to have different accountants come in and share different stories of problems they'd encountered and discuss how they solved them. Then, we had a class discussion about how what we were learning related to the solutions that the accountants brought up. It was a way for students to learn more concretely."

Written by Emma Luttrell on November 18th, 2021
Answer Example
"Soon after I became a professor, I discovered that about half of one of my classes had cheated on the final and shared answers. While I knew cheating was not okay, I also wondered if these students cheated because I had not prepared them properly for the test. I also knew that several of these students would be suspended if they were caught cheating and could lose scholarships. I decided to discuss the issue with my department head, and we decided to speak with each student individually to assess why they had chosen to cheat. Ultimately, after speaking with the students, we realized that most of them cheated for fear of being put on academic probation if they didn't do well on the final. We decided not to report them but did make each student separately retake the exam. We also held a separate one-hour study course to help them prepare. From this situation, I learned the importance of assessing student understanding throughout the semester to make sure that students who needed additional help could get it. I also learned the importance of communicating directly. I have carried this into many professional situations since."
