"I know people learn differently, so I incorporate a mix of techniques when I train others. Some learn by overserving, some by being hands-on and doing the task, and others learn from reading materials or written instructions. I typically have new employees shadow a senior employee so they can watch them perform transactions. Once they are comfortable, I have them demonstrate their understanding with either the senior employee or me supervising. I have handouts and one sheeters for them to keep with them to reference as they are learning as well. I frequently stop to ask what questions they have, and I also review material with them several times to ensure they understand and are competent."

Communication skills, patience, compassion, interpersonal skills, active listening, and subject matter expertise are all required to be an effective trainer. Consider different learning styles and describe which techniques and tools you use to train others. If you have never been in a formal position to train others, consider the experience you have mentoring a student or teaching something in a volunteer capacity (piano lessons, fundraising, etc.).
