As our Academic Support Coordinator, you will be responsible for recruiting and hiring tutors. What competencies and qualities would you look for in hiring a tutor?

In the college setting, Academic Support Coordinators are often responsible for finding, hiring, and training tutors to assist students struggling in the coursework. While your interviewer doesn't expect you to have hands-on experience in hiring tutors, they will want you to be educated on the qualities that make a great tutor. They will also want to hear that you can incorporate digging for these qualities and skills as you search for great tutors. Before your interview, be sure to research these qualities to talk about them during your interview. Some key things to tell your interviewer that a great tutor possesses are empathy, enthusiasm, and patience.

"I don't have experience recruiting and hiring tutors, but I foresee this being a fascinating part of this job. I know that tutors must be subject matter experts on the content they will be tutoring. I also know that they must be respectful, patient, and be great listeners because they will be working with struggling students. In my classroom, I would select students to help me tutor other students in my other classes. This was not always the student with the highest grade in the class. Yes, they have to have an in-depth knowledge of the content, but this is only a part of it. I knew the student needed to be patient, respectful, and a good listener. I looked for students who showed a passion for helping others.
