In this role as an Academic Support Specialist, you will work very closely with students regarding their educational path. At times, you may be included in personal information about them that can consist of personal situations, learning disabilities, or private information about them. While your interviewer is asking if honesty is always the best policy with this question, they are ideally looking to hear that you can maintain a sense of confidentiality regarding a student's information when that confidentiality is necessary. The best way to answer this question is to talk about any experience you have in working with confidential information and explain why maintaining confidentiality was important. This will give your interviewer the best sense of your ability to do so in this role.

"I fully understand that this job will put me in intimate situations with students, and I take confidentiality very seriously in my work. In my current role, scores on coursework and grades are considered confidential information between the student and professor, and I never breach that confidentiality. In this role, I know that I could be potentially working with students that are learning disabled and that I would not be permitted to talk about or disclose this information to anyone."

I believe student confidentiality is very important. As a teacher, I worked hard to establish relationships with my students that were built on trust. My students sometimes shared private information. They knew that if they shared illegal or harmful information I would have to report it. I also dealt with many students who had different learning disabilities and personal information that was not to be shared with anyone.
