What does safety mean to you?
Not only is safety one of Delta's core values, but Delta's first business principle is, "Put safety first, always. Provide a safe work environment for all employees." Also, in their code of ethics, they reiterate that "the safety of our customers and fellow employees is our highest priority. Not only do we comply with all applicable safety-related requirements, but since safety is a core value at Delta, we have adopted safety rules and procedures that go beyond what the law requires." So aside from familiarizing yourself with all the manners in which safety is woven into their culture, you'll want to understand the basic safety principles they expect you to adhere to every day.
According to Delta, your responsibility for safety includes "Coming to work fit for duty. Health, safety, and security are not negotiable. Violence, threats, and weapons are not tolerated," and "drugs, alcohol, and tobacco" are not permitted. These are spelled out in their documents, "The Way We Fly," "Rules of the Road," and their "Code of Conduct and Ethics."
"Whatever your job, safety is a part of it. Providing a safe, secure operation is our fundamental obligation to our customers, our colleagues, and the communities we are privileged to serve. Take time to understand the safety policies and procedures for your job. Ask questions if you don't understand; make suggestions when you see ways to improve safety and if you see an issue that may affect safety, let your leader know about it right away."
HireVue explains and recommends the following: "Video-based assessments evaluate both what you know about performing the job ('hard skills' or competencies) and what recruiters call 'soft' competencies, like communication skills, conscientiousness, problem-solving skills, team orientation, and initiative. The competencies in your video assessment are based on research by organizational psychologists about the skills and characteristics that are most important for success in that particular job role. The best thing you can do is to carefully study the job description and be sure that you have examples and real experience behind you to 'show what you know' about doing that job well."
"To me, safety is caring and means peace of mind and being able to ensure everything and everyone who is in my care is secure. In high school, I did a lot of babysitting and took this very seriously. I never took my eyes off the kids for even a second. I take my responsibilities very seriously. So, if I ever notice anything that could be considered a safety hazard, I address it immediately, or inform those who should be made aware so it can be addressed, if not by me."
