QUESTION 1 OF 25

Tell us about yourself.

When starting off your interview, Delta advises their candidates to "Be yourself. Relax. Have fun and let your skills and personality shine! Most importantly, be authentic. Be yourself and answer questions honestly."

Displaying your personality can make a big difference in an interview. Although you're communicating with the algorithm, try to imagine you're engaging with an actual human being. Strive to project a calm and relaxed demeanor while speaking with a balanced yet enthusiastic tone. Maintain a soft smile and make eye contact with the camera. Radiate confidence and gracious composure.

HireVue advertises that their "talent experience platform" streamlines the hiring process and enhances client recruitment by improving talent engagement, screening, and hiring. They suggest their products and services help "the ebbs and flows of the hiring landscape" by decreasing turnover, and maximizing the recruitment of top performers while saving their clients "the thousands of dollars that one bad hire costs" and "thousands of payroll hours" by streamlining their recruiting process.

The key feature of HireVue is the use of proprietary machine learning algorithms to analyze video interviews and predict future job performance. By analyzing verbal and non-verbal cues, like tone, body language, and consistency of answers, they'll identify a candidate's expertise, skills, personality, and integrity using data points. The information will then be compiled into "candidate insights reports" by the algorithm and forwarded to the recruiter.

You'll have about 20-30 seconds to prepare your answer once a question is asked. Then, each answer has an average three-minute time limit. You are limited to recording your answers only once. There's no opportunity for do-overs. Some questions may take longer to respond to, but don't feel pressured to hurry. Also, avoid attempting to prolong your answer. Rather, be concise.

"When I graduated from high school, I knew I wanted to travel so I took a gap year and joined AmeriCorps. In that experience, I gained several leadership skills and learned a lot about several cultures and the world at large. Then I went to university with a keen interest in travel and took my time figuring out where I wanted to go next. So I earned a degree in Sociology, and learned three languages, Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian. Now, I am hoping to earn a position as a flight attendant, and flying with Delta is at the top of my list."

Delta offers the following guidance on its website: "All virtual interviews at Delta are structured, meaning that you'll be asked a predetermined set of questions related to the job you're applying to. How do I prepare for an interview? Practice answering questions using the STAR method. The STAR method is a structured manner of responding to a behavioral-based interview question by discussing the specific situation, task, action, and result of the situation you are describing. It is a useful method of answering interview questions as it allows you to provide concrete examples to demonstrate that you possess the experience and skills for the job at hand."

Hirevue offers the following tip: "Virtual interviewing is similar to the video calls many of us have been using. You will use a computer, tablet, or mobile device to answer questions created by the company for the position you are applying for. Maximize your comfort level and share your experiences and skills as naturally as possible. This is an opportunity to share your story as a candidate. All candidates applying to a position will receive the same set of questions, selected by the hiring company. Additionally, HireVue takes measures to prevent candidates from seeing these interview questions beforehand. These measures ensure that each candidate has the same amount of time to review the questions, and prepare their responses, giving all candidates the same interview experience and an equal shot at putting their best foot forward."
