UnitedHealth Group's DE&I philosophy is very clear in the fact that the company remains committed to a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workforce because it best helps improve the care and health of the members and communities they serve. Their approach to diversity starts with recruiting talent from all over the world and continues with various employee resource groups to ensure that all staff feel welcomed and can perform at their best. This is your chance to show that you can flourish in this environment, so make sure to take advantage of this question. Talk about the diverse work environments you have been a part of the in past, how you worked to your highest potential within them, and what you will bring to UHG from those experiences.

"The communities that UnitedHealth Group serves are very culturally diverse and your staff must represent this same diverse population for many reasons. In talking with some of your employees, I'm most impressed at how you live your DE&I philosophy every day, rather than just putting words to paper. Your strong partnerships like AARP and the National Black MBA Association sure prove this. Throughout my career, I've been fortunate to be a part of very diverse teams and work with a wide variety of clients. I love the opportunity to learn from others, as we all bring unique perspectives and new ways of doing things that we can learn from each other."

It gives me immense pleasure to work with people from different geopolitical boundaries. In my most recent project in HIS, I worked with team members spread across three different countries. I got an opportunity to learn about different perspectives on problems and was also introduced to various traditions.

Great! It's good that you've experienced diversity in past positions, but you'll want to provide the interviewer with more details here. Can you talk about one of those roles and the types of colleagues you worked with there? Emphasize how the diverse personalities, education levels, and ethnicities exposed you to many different perspectives and helped you to have a richer experience.

I greatly value diversity and I'm so happy you pointed out on your website the need for diversity at UGH. I have worked with a diverse group throughout my healthcare career and I feel most comfortable in that type of environment because of all the learning opportunities. Diversity is extremely important in this field because most of our population is diverse and it is important to reflect the customers we serve.

Amanda's Feedback
You've expressed that you appreciate and enjoy diversity in the workplace, but you can make your answer more impactful by being more specific. Tell the interviewer about the kind of diversity or inclusion you've benefited from and what you've learned or how you've benefited from working with people of different backgrounds, ethnicities, abilities, ages, etc.

Great! Can you talk about some of these past experiences you've had within a culturally diverse environment? How have you benefited from working with a diverse group of people? What have you learned from them? (Keep in mind that diversity can refer to ethnicities and race but also age, gender, and education level.) Nice job!

I've spent most of my career working with a variety of people, including in my current role. This type of workplace makes me feel most at ease and joyful because it provides me with a great learning opportunity.

Amanda's Feedback
This is a good start, but you can better highlight your experience working in a diverse and inclusive environment by talking about specific projects you worked on with a diverse team and how embracing those differences helped you solve problems or meet client needs. If you have any formal training in diversity and inclusion, this is also a great opportunity to talk about that experience. In the end, try to share how you celebrate diversity and remain inclusive in the workplace.

I have worked with diverse groups of people throughout my career. I am most comfortable, and happy, in this type of environment because it offers me unique learning opportunities and it also helps honed my cross-cultural sensitivity and global perspective which has become increasingly important. In my previous role, since 80% of the business is outside the US, it gave me a tremendous opportunity and immense pleasure to work with people from different geopolitical boundaries, people in Asia, the Pacific, Europe, and South America. I got an opportunity to learn about different perspectives on problems and was also introduced to various traditions.
Marcie's Feedback
Awesome! It's great that you have experience working in a more diverse atmosphere and that you see the value in doing so. Your response is memorable because you provide an example from your life of a time when you frequently interacted with people from other cultures and locations. Excellent answer!

I believe diversity in culture brings out the best results, allowing teams to view ideas from many different perspectives. I have worked in a large global company, on teams that span the globe, crossing many cultures.
Marcie's Feedback
Nice! The interviewer will appreciate that you value diversity. Can you talk more about your experience working in diverse environments and perhaps give an example of a time when you benefited from hearing different perspectives?
