At UnitedHealth Group, the work you perform could be in a variety of facets of their overall business. Some teams provide direct care to patients, some work with data analytics and technology, and others work with benefits plan coverages, claims services, Medicare services, and community-based programs. No matter what team and role you are being considered to join there, the one fact is that you will be working with a variety of people and your ability to communicate clearly and effectively will be important. Your interviewer is allowing you to discuss the communication skills you would bring to their team, so highlight where you feel you are strong in this area and give some examples from your work past on why you give yourself this rating.

"I want you to be assured that I would come to UnitedHealth Group as a person who is open in all communications, listens actively, responds in a timely manner, and always shows empathy in communications no matter the situation. Because of this, I would rate my communication skills as a 9 out of 10. Throughout my career, my colleagues and customers I've worked with have always appreciated my direct and respectful communication. If you were to contact my references, I'm confident that they wouldn't hesitate to elaborate on the fact that our communications always took place with a smile on my face and that I always took into account the needs and feelings of others that I gathered from situations."

I have excellent communication skills. I try to give much thought to my words whether it be verbally or through email to ensure there is nothing lost in translation.
Marcie's Feedback
Consider rating your communication skills on a scale of 1-10 and giving the interviewer a specific rating. You might also want to break down your communication skills into writing, verbal, non-verbal, and listening, so you can give a few different ratings and highlight your strengths. Great job!

I have strong communication skills. As a contract specialist, I know that every word is important, so my written communication is very strong and professional. My verbal skills are also strong. I am a good listener, and in meetings, I am someone who will be listening and asking questions before speaking.
Marcie's Feedback
How will all of these strong communication skills enable you to excel in this position? Consider discussing this to remind the interviewer why you're the perfect fit. Otherwise, great job on remembering to break your communication down into written, verbal, and listening. You could also mention interpersonal and nonverbal communication as well. Great job!

Working as an admitting NP in the ER helped build my communication skills. To serve in a position of an admitting provider requires good communication skills, your initial assessment is gathered through verbal/listening, nonverbal, and writing which serves as the foundation for the pts plan of care for their hospital stay, and I perform my job well, but because of my deep African accent when I have to sometimes repeat myself to a patient, I would rate my communication skills a 8/10 with room for improvement.

Jaymie's Feedback
Great job! You highlight important skills like nonverbal and verbal communication, written communication, and active listening. The interviewer will be looking for these skills in the ideal candidate's response.
