Employee well-being is something that UnitedHealth Group takes seriously, as shown in the wellness initiative, financial security packages, and mental/emotional support programs that they offer to staff. On top of this, the company offers many flexible work arrangements to allow their staff to balance their career with their personal life. Knowing that the work is busy and that things can get stressful from time to time, your interviewer ideally wants to hear that you have the ability to take time for yourself and your family outside of work so that you are refreshed and ready for every work shift. Talk openly about your ability to strike a balance between life and work and don't hesitate to discuss how you've done so during busy jobs from your past.

"I want you and the entire UnitedHealth Group team to know that maintaining a healthy and safe lifestyle outside of work is important to me because I am a career-driven individual who has a growing family and a spouse who works hard as well. My time in the office is dedicated to my work and I only currently take work home when absolutely necessary. But by being organized on the job, I'm able to be very efficient and don't do this much. Outside of work, my mental and physical health are very important to me. Relaxation and staying physically in shape help me function at a high level on the job."

I do things that make me happy during my time off. By consistently re-energizing in this way, I am always fresh and excited to give my best at work.

Rachelle's Feedback
Self-care and balance are critical, indeed! Try offering up some details on what you do to make yourself feel happy and re-energized. This answer could be used as an excellent conversational piece.

I make it a point to distinguish my personal and professional life. When I am at work I would definitely give my all energy and attention to the organization and when I am not in my office, I would spend my free time doing the activities I like or spending it with family. However, I am open to using personal time to complete important assignments to ensure the work gets done.

Rachelle's Feedback
Distinguishing personal and professional life is a vital action to take, and it's wonderful that you can successfully compartmentalize these areas of your life (aside from exceptional situations, of course). This answer shows that you are dedicated to your work while maintaining an essential balance to avoid burnout.

I make an effort to take personal time and be active and social in order to ensure that I am achieving a balance.

Cindy's Feedback
Good. Can you describe how you're able to complete your work in a timely manner so that you can enjoy personal interests?
Anonymous Answer
It is very important to feel good about what you do so it won't drain your soul. There is an understanding among family members that there is a time for work and a time for family time. I believe that I have established this balance a long time ago.
Marcie's Feedback
Ok; great! Maybe talk a bit more about how you established that balance and what it looks like. You might also talk about activities that you enjoy outside of work that help to relieve stress like working out, reading, traveling, spending time with family and friends, listening to music, etc. This will help give the interviewer a better picture of who you are as a whole person, outside of just work.

Although it's essential to love what you do for work, so it doesn't feel like a chore, it's also necessary to keep a healthy work and life balance. In my free time, I indulge in things that make me happy, whether it be fishing with my kids, taking walks, or treating myself to a pedicure. By consistently rejuvenating in this way, I can give even more energy when I am at work.

Amanda's Feedback
Wonderful answer! You've shared what you enjoy outside the workplace to relax and recharge. You can strengthen your response even further by sharing the time, organization, or workflow management strategies or tools you use to work efficiently and ensure that you maintain a healthy balance.

There are times when things need to be done today when there are not enough hours in the day. I do my best to manage that by being prepared, staying organized, and realizing that sometimes it is okay to ask for help.
Marcie's Feedback
It sounds like you're capable of handling stressful situations. But don't forget to address the topic of balancing work and life. Do you try not to check work email once you're home for the night so you can focus on your family and friends instead? Do you take pre-planned vacation days throughout the year to take care of your mental health and recharge? Talk more about how you balance work and life so that you remain healthy and energized.

I have been fortunate that I always enjoy what I do, even though at times my job could be super demanding and time-consuming. I always make time to have lunch with colleagues to get to know the people I work with and build healthy relationships. In the meantime, it helps to take you away from your desk and engage in social interactions. I also exercise regularly to counter stress to help clear my mind and stay sharp and focused. I get back home at a reasonable hour to spend time with my family to have dinner together, read together, and play a few rounds of cards. During weekends, we hike, meet with friends and take short day trips.
Marcie's Feedback
Excellent! Your answer perfectly explains how you balance life and work. The interviewer will be happy that you exercise, socialize with friends and colleagues, spend time with family, travel, read, and so on. These are all healthy activities that will keep you mentally and emotionally strong. Great!

I have really enjoyed my work over the years, and that goes a long way in helping balance life and work. My family is important to me, and I make sure to take time with them on the weekends and in the evenings. I also know the nature of my work sometimes demands long hours, and my family is very understanding of these situations.
Marcie's Feedback
It's great that your family is so supportive of your job and that you spend quality time with them on the weekends and in the evenings. Some other ways you can balance work and life include taking breaks and preplanned vacations to recharge, communicating your needs, creating a dedicated workspace, building downtime into your routine, and learning to say no so you don't get overwhelmed. Make sure to emphasize to the interviewer that you recognize the importance of work/life balance and strive to achieve this. Great job!
