The interviewer wants to understand the role that you naturally take on when working in a team-based environment. Team projects can have many roles, such as project manager, business analyst, steering committee, engineer, and team leader, to name a few. Describe what role you tend to take when working on a team project.

"I am usually the 'ideas person' in team projects. In my current position, I am not the most persuasive salesperson, but I am highly creative. This skill means that, in most projects, I am great at creating a plan of action but am most comfortable passing the final client-facing tasks to our more extroverted personnel."

Let the interviewer know if you tend to take the lead, but avoid sounding overbearing. If you usually like to generate new ideas and allow someone else to execute them, share your creative side but express that you prefer others to take the lead. Ultimately, you want to portray that you are comfortable taking any role within a team environment and that you let your skillset determine your role.

"I am most comfortable taking the role of project manager. I can work in any role, but my organizational and problem-solving skills are best used in managing projects. I am highly detailed and can keep projects flowing smoothly while meeting or beating every deadline with the help of my team."

It depends on the project. I am comfortable leading projects and facilitating the meetings and action items associated with completion, but I'm also just as comfortable playing a supporting role. It just depends on what the project is and who makes the most sense to lead it.
