The term 'pharmaceutical' refers to the creation and sale of medicine. Cardinal Health is a significant player in the pharmaceutical arena in the United States, distributing pharmaceuticals, medical and laboratory products, and performance and data solutions for healthcare facilities. Your interviewer wants to be assured that you have a good baseline knowledge of recent advancements in the field, showing you have a strong interest in the industry and stay up-to-date on current advancements.

Ryan Brunner has over ten years of experience recruiting, interviewing, and hiring candidates in the healthcare, public service, and private manufacturing/distribution industries.
"There have been so many developments in the pharmaceutical industry the past three years with the pandemic. To me, the fast response of the entire industry to put out vaccinations in short order was impressive. The teamwork, communication, and logistics of these efforts ultimately save countless lives."
"I am most impressed by the way the pharma industry has switched its focus from treatment to prevention. It's a great way to flip our thinking in the industry, and will save the lives of so many people."

Before your interview, be sure to research recent advancements in the pharmaceutical industry in recent years. A 2020 industry blog reported on the top seven major pharma trends predicted to shape the industry over the next ten years. These trends include 1.) Artificial intelligence (AI), 2.) Digitalization of medicine, 3.) Body sensors, 4.) 3-D printing, 5.) Personalized medicine, 6.) Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), and 7.) Patient involvement.
What you see as the most significant pharmaceutical development may not be on this list, but this gives you a few ideas. Discuss what YOU believe is the most extraordinary development in the past three years and why.

"I think the most significant development in the pharmaceutical industry in the past three years is the use of artificial intelligence. Using artificial intelligence in the pharmaceutical industry has accelerated drug discovery and development. AI is used in clinical trials, the overall improvement of medications, and fraud detection. I am constantly amazed at the amount of information that can be stored in clinical trial databases using AI."

It may seem like an easy answer, but I think the development that has had the biggest impact the fastest has been mRNA vaccines. As someone who worked in the industry for years before COVID-19, we saw this as a cool technology that was slowly coming along, and then during COVID-19 it received so much funding and attention that it shot out of the gates like a cannon. Another large development is the cell-grown meat industry. I think in the next few years we will see a lot come out of that advancement.
