Question 17 of 35

Give me an example of a time you were given little direction on a job assignment. How did you complete it?

"A person on our team left due to a medical issue. This left our supervisors scrambling to finish several projects. They needed me to take over the project for the person on leave and asked me to do the best I could. I logged into their computer station and researched their system to determine where they left off. It took some creativity to piece everything together, and luckily some of the leg work had already been done, albeit not the way I would have tackled the project. In the end, since they had built the foundation in a way that made me look at the project through a different lens, the project turned out to be a unique success. It was better than either one of us could have delivered. I attribute the successful outcome to a group effort."

      How to Answer

The interviewer wants to know how resourceful you are and whether you exhibit 'outside-of-the-box' thinking. Being unique in your example can exemplify you as an attractive prospective employee. Detail the situation, what inspired you to take the approach you took, and how you achieved a positive outcome. Avoid providing examples where you went outside of the chain of command or the approach you took resulted in failure. This will only serve as a red flag, presenting you as a liability.
