Using the STAR method, describe the situation/task/action/result. Give an example of a situation where you recognized a communication breakdown on your team, the task required to enhance communication on your team, the action you took to resolve the issue, and the overall result of how you got everyone on the same page, repairing the communication issue. As American Airlines states, "Expand your horizons in a team that becomes a family. We care about all team members. We succeed as a team. We build future leaders. We drive to be the best. We continuously challenge the status quo." These are the core statements of their five leadership attributes; Caring, collaboration, Development, Results, and Future.

"I worked on a team to solve a problem with a project that could affect our ability to reach our individual goals. They tasked each person on the team with a different aspect of our project, such as gathering and analyzing data. We came together to discuss the results but couldn't seem to agree. Part of the problem was how everyone was competing to talk and struggling to listen to each person's opinions. I explained my observation and suggested we give each person a chance to discuss their findings and opinions, which helped us take a more collaborative approach."

"My current company recently went through a merger, which caused a lack of communication between our teams because people were flooded with thoughts of job insecurity. I suggested to my department head that we have a team-building event where we'd examine the outlook of the merger and how it would impact our departments. Gathering everyone to remind them that we are still a team was beneficial in getting everyone to calm and gain a broader perspective of the big picture."

I have had times where I couldn't really understand my coworkers' accent. Being of Caribbean descent I am fully comfortable with this weakness. When I am faced with this I always make sure I repeat back what they explained to me just so that I get confirmation that I understand what was asked. If I really cannot understand I make sure I am honest about it and apologize. I rather apologize and ask them to explain it in a different way than pretend to understand and mess up the task at hand.
