This is the only appropriate time to discuss pay in the early interview process. There are several factors to consider when framing realistic expectations. You don't want to sell yourself short or aim too high. Use your current salary as a base-line. Contrast your current earnings with where you feel you are on your career path. Then consider where you ultimately want to take your career. Other factors to consider are any other benefits your current or previous employers offer, such as bonuses, incentives, commission, medical, dental, vision, 401K, transportation perks, stock shares, etc. This should give you a reasonable expectation of what you should ask for. Be open, realistic, and honest. Transparency is the best choice when salary-based questions arise.

"Currently, I earn a base salary of 45,000 per year plus a potential 20% annual bonus. Last year my earnings were 52,000, and I would like to stay in the same range or slightly higher."

18-20 an hour, which is within range of this position, so very happy about that. My last position was in that range, which is great.
