1. Tell me about yourself.
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
This question offers you an opportunity to make an excellent first impression. This is your chance to deliver your best elevator pitch. So spend more time on your professional journey and how it led you to compete for a position at RSM. Don't focus on your personal life. Though it is worthwhile to let your personality shine and be more professional than personal, you want to set a consistent tone throughout the interview while exhibiting that you are a good fit for RSM's culture and would do well in representing their company.

What You Need to Know
There is an article in RSM's Newsroom where they offer interview tips specific to their company. "When recruiting, we focus on the applicant as an individual, their background, and why they want to join our successful team. We have found that spending time with candidates to understand their interests, capabilities and future aspirations is the best measure of their suitability for the role. Research has suggested the first twelve words you utter will determine the interviewer's overall impression of you, so it turns out small talk can be crucial. Commenting on the weather is always a safe icebreaker but you can also be more imaginative in demonstrating a sense of confidence in your surroundings (even if you don't feel it). Try to make the first twelve words relate to the company you are visiting."

Tips
RSM's website states that "you will be invited to an online video assessment. This is so we can get to know you a little better and if you will be the right fit for RSM. You will have five days to complete the video interview and have plenty of time to practice. We look for authentic, natural responses so don't prepare your answer or read from a script."
RSM uses Cappfinity as their online interview assessment vendor. Their recruiters advise that you "make sure you understand the technology platform being used for your interview and test out audio and video ahead of time." Cappofinity also advises, "We recommend that you familiarise yourself with the technology requirements and our guidance in advance."
So beforehand, ensure your computer's equipment is properly functioning, that your lighting is sufficient, that everything is functioning properly, and that you are well prepared for your interview. As RSM advises, spend time visiting "Cappfinity's preparation hub to find out everything you need to know about strength-based assessments ahead of applying."

Answer Example
"I have always had an aptitude towards business, finance, and system implementation. When I graduated, I landed my first upper management position right out of the gate. At a certain point, I felt my career had become stagnant, and I needed to shift around some of my goals. When I examined my skills, I realized I found the most joy in mentoring and coaching others, and while examining my strengths, I realized shifting my career path toward the world of consulting seemed like a great fit for me. While researching prospective employers in this field, I identified RSM as the most ideal choice for me, as they are in line with my ideal culture and values. So, thank you for meeting with me today."

Adaptability
2. Are you willing to travel for work?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
Most positions with RSM detail whether you are expected to travel for work towards the bottom of the job description, and in most cases, they say "Travel: Yes." This interview question aims to assess whether you thoroughly read the job description, how flexible you are to meet the expectations of this role, any limitations you have regarding the distance you are willing to go, and how frequently you are willing to travel. How you answer will help them determine how far you are willing to go to perform in a manner that best benefits the company, and thus helps determine your ambition and how far you could potentially take your career.

What You Need to Know
Cappfinity states on their website, "We are committed to matching the world to its perfect job. Our preparation hub provides you with guidance and technical support to help you prepare for an assessment as well as feel comfortable and confident in your approach." So, be completely honest when answering this question. Agreeing to travel for work when doing so isn't conducive to your career goals or your job satisfaction will neither serve you nor your potential employer.
Written by Kevin Downey on April 9th, 2023
Tips
Keep in mind, Cappfinity will likely assess your comfort level by evaluating how honestly you answer this question. Common non-verbal cues used to identify dishonesty are stroking your chin, covering your mouth or your eyes, gaze avoidance, the direction of your gaze, excessive fidgeting, such as restless foot and leg movements, frequent body posture changes, and grooming behaviors such as playing with hair or pressing your fingers to lips.
Written by Kevin Downey on April 9th, 2023
Answer Example
"I am prepared to travel for work. I saw at the bottom of the job posting that travel was required for work, which would be expected based on the position's description."

Behavioral
3. How do you spend your free time?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
This question is an icebreaker to get you out of interview mode. Asking a more informal question will more likely result in a sincere answer. This could reveal a lot about you, from how professional you are to how strategic your answer is, which could inform them of how well you would build relationships with RSM's clients. So try to make yourself relatable while maintaining a certain degree of professionalism. Remember, they will only consider hiring those who would uphold RSM's reputation.

What You Need to Know
Cappfinity's unique strengths-based methodology will use questions such as these to establish when you are sincere and true to yourself. Their methodology will then contrast what it may perceive as your genuine personality against your more reserved and performative answers. So try to maintain a friendly, consistent demeanor while embodying the RSM culture.

Tips
Here are some tips Cappfinity offers for answering questions such as these. "What do your friends and family know you for? How would they describe you to somebody who has never met you? What do you truly enjoy doing, and what are you like at your best? What achievements are you most proud of, and how did you achieve these? What activities (inside and outside of a professional environment) stay on your to-do list for a long time? What is it about these activities that you do not enjoy?"
Written by Kevin Downey on April 9th, 2023
Answer Example
"I like to listen to music and establish harmony. Whether that means cleaning my house, spending time with my spouse and my kids, getting to that project I've been meaning to prioritize, or doing nothing but listening to music and centering myself. I just like to relax, take things at my own pace, and keep everything harmonious. Music helps me do that and helps make it fun and something to be looked forward to."

4. What would you do if you noticed a coworker violating your company's code of conduct?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
How you answer this question will reveal the strength of your work ethic and your performance standard in how well you have prepared for this interview. So, to answer this question effectively, familiarize yourself with RSM's code of conduct, in which they state, "Each individual must uphold the Code and its values and principles: Consciously and consistently model the Code. Be accountable for your behavior. Challenge each other to uphold the values, principles, and policies of our firm and the profession."
Written by Kevin Downey on April 9th, 2023
What You Need to Know
Cappfinity uses their unique strengths-based methodology to analyze data points, such as facial expressions, eye movements, body movements, clothing details, and vocal inflections, to evaluate consistency between your statements and your non-verbal cues. This will help them determine your experience level and predict your future job performance. That information, along with the recorded interviews, is passed on to the company's hiring authority for further study.
Written by Kevin Downey on April 9th, 2023
Tips
Cappfinity advertises that their strengths-based interviews "are designed to assess your potential and what motivates you; whether you already have experience in these areas or not." So consider these tips they offer for preparing for their RSM strength-based assessment interview; "Consider spending some time asking yourself the questions. Understanding what you enjoy doing and can do well is the best preparation. We encourage you to draw on examples that are most authentic to you. They can be from both your professional and personal experiences. Relax, take your time, and try to answer the questions naturally."
Written by Kevin Downey on April 9th, 2023
Answer Example
"Integrity is my number one core value. I am naturally a very conscientious person and am always trying to do the right thing. I would likely encourage the individual of the code of conduct and give them the benefit of the doubt. But I would also inform my superiors."

Career Goals
5. Why RSM?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
In an article in RSM's Newsroom on interview tips, they offer the following advice: "Often in first interviews, we are simply looking for a spark. We want an applicant to show their desire for the opportunity. But too often candidates do not even know what they are applying for, and an otherwise promising meeting fails to fulfill its potential simply through a lack of preparation." So make sure you perform your due diligence in preparing for the interview, knowing the position and the company inside and out, and memorizing your resume and cover letter like the back of your hand.
Written by Kevin Downey on April 9th, 2023
What You Need to Know
How you answer this question will help the assessment vendor evaluate how confident you are that you're the right fit for this opportunity and whether you are pursuing it for the right reasons. In other words, does this job and this company feel like a strong mutual fit and stand to propel your career forward, or are you mainly interested in the money? "Cappfinity's unique strengths-based methodology identifies top performers most suited to the company's goals and culture. They record on-demand responses to a range of strengths-based interview questions to evaluate the candidate's fit for the role. [RSM's] recruiters can review, sort, and filter candidate responses efficiently online."
Written by Kevin Downey on April 9th, 2023
Answer Example
"I consider myself a creative and unique individual and am very artistically inclined. Some people have labeled me eclectic. But, in the typical, more old-school work environments, I have found that I am not often truly understood or provided equal opportunity or recognition for my contributions. So, I identify with the impact of your statement, the power of being understood. Additionally, how RSM views and values teamwork resonated with me, as did RSM's core values and key behaviors. So answering your question, RSM feels like the right fit for me."

Career Goals
6. Where do you see yourself in five years?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
This question aims to assess the range of your work ethic as a performance indicator. In other words, how you answer stands to reveal whether you have thoroughly researched the company and the position and whether you've explored the potential for future career opportunities with RSM and the opportunity for advancement from within.
Written by Kevin Downey on April 9th, 2023
What You Need to Know
RSM advertises that they are "a place where you are valued as an individual and recognized for your accomplishments. Experience the power of being understood. You want your next step to be the right one. Whether you have a specific career goal in mind or look forward to exploring new ways your career may grow, our culture supports an environment within which you are empowered to own your career, education to help you develop the necessary skills to grow, and exposure to the right people and opportunities to help you get there."
Written by Kevin Downey on April 9th, 2023
Tips
Before the interview, go to a mirror, look yourself in the eye, and give yourself a pep talk, affirming what you have to offer and why you believe it. Do some quick physical exercises to physically manifest confidence. Stretch your back, improve your posture, and make yourself as big as possible. Research the body language of a confident and relaxed person in a seated position, and be the best version of yourself you can be.
Written by Kevin Downey on April 9th, 2023
Answer Example
"In all honesty, I have a vague idea of where I want my career goals to take me, but my career plan is more focused on my development and professional growth than landing in specific positions. I hope to have been promoted and advance into a more prestigious position with RSM. I hope to be valued and recognized for my accomplishments. I want my next step to be the right one, but until working with the company, seeing what kind of impact I can make, and the opportunities that align with my impact, it is difficult to say."

Career Goals
7. What motivates you at work?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
A candidate whose ideal working conditions and environment match what RSM has to offer or whose career goals align with RSM career opportunities is more likely to stay with them for a long time, lending to employee retention. However, a candidate who is only interested in RSM's benefits and salary will likely lack loyalty and be more likely to contribute to turnover as soon as a better offer comes along. This question aims to determine what motivates you to perform at your best and what you perceive working for RSM stands to offer you.
Written by Kevin Downey on April 9th, 2023
What You Need to Know
As part of their recruitment efforts, RSM advertises on their careers website, "Do you want to make a meaningful impact while continuing to grow? Whatever your passions and interests, RSM can help you explore the right opportunities. You've worked hard to get where you are, and now you're ready to use your skills, talents, and individuality to kick off your career." They advertise this as a selling point, hoping it will motivate their ideal candidates to pursue a career with them.

Tips
Cappfinity suggests that "studies have shown that when we use our strengths, we are happier and experience more vitality and positive emotions. We are less stressed, better at achieving our goals, perform better, and are more engaged at work." Cappfinity will likely watch your posture to gauge your enthusiasm. Slouching, folding your arms, or protecting your neck will portray the opposite of enthusiasm and motivation. Similarly, your professional appearance, such as how clean your clothing and surroundings are, will convey how seriously you take this opportunity. Cappfinity will also likely monitor your facial expressions and eye, head, and hand movements throughout the interview. It may also scan tone for your vocal cues, such as placing stress or emphasis on certain words, stutters, or taking long pauses.
Written by Kevin Downey on April 9th, 2023
Experienced Example
"I am most often motivated by helping the team achieve our mutual goals, by the camaraderie that comes with that, and being recognized for my contributions to the team, which I always put 200% into. I hope to advance my career and am motivated by the opportunities to advance. I am often motivated when achieving those goals is placed within reach."

Career Goals
8. Where would you like a career with RSM to take you?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
Traditionally, it is suggested an employee who is willing to do whatever it takes and always answers the call will go the farthest with their career. In this spirit, RSM advertises that they offer plenty of career advancement opportunities. "We are committed to helping you achieve your goals by providing opportunities that will not only help you succeed but also help you explore, innovate, and find fulfillment in your career." With locations worldwide, stretching across all of Africa, Asia Pacific, Europe, Latin America, North America, and the Middle East, this question aims to determine your ambition and flexibility to go wherever the company needs you and whether you would pounce on any opportunity to advance that they present to you.
Written by Kevin Downey on April 9th, 2023
What You Need to Know
Cappfinity advertises on their site, "It's important to us that everybody has an equal chance to succeed. For those starting their career, the Strengths approach explores what motivates and energises you, rather than placing too much emphasis on what experience you might have in any certain area. Naturally, for those further along in their career, previous experience is something we recognise as important, so may be incorporated into our approach."
Written by Kevin Downey on April 9th, 2023
Tips
Cappfinity will probably evaluate your response by how sincerely you answer this question through the strength of your response and how enthusiastically you respond to the possibility of working in one of their global locations. So answer with sincerity. If you genuinely like the idea of moving to various locations, express your interest. If you would rather stay local, communicate the career direction you'd like to take. Convey your enthusiasm for pursuing this opportunity and the possibility of a long-lasting career with RSM.
Written by Kevin Downey on April 9th, 2023
Experienced Example
"I hope this opportunity would take me as far as it possibly can. I want to learn and grow as a professional and wouldn't mind seeing more of the world. If there are opportunities to advance by serving in a few of RSM's global locations, I am more than willing."

Communication
9. Tell me about a time you had to communicate something complex in simple terms.
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
This question aims to evaluate your communication skills, both verbal and written. A highly skilled communicator will be able to adapt their communication style to that of less skilled communicators and will be able to convey complex information in as few words as possible. They do so with empathy, using tools such as mirroring, and asking clarifying questions while actively listening and validating whomever they are communicating with. When answering any question about your communication skills, you'll want your answer to be succinct and clear.
Written by Kevin Downey on April 9th, 2023
What You Need to Know
Remember, RSM places a great deal of value on high-level communication. This message is repeated throughout the branding and their culture through their trademarked phrase, 'The Power of Being Understood.' "We work to deliver the power of being understood not only to our clients, but also to our people. When we feel truly understood, we are empowered to move forward with confidence personally and professionally."
Written by Kevin Downey on April 9th, 2023
Tips
Cappfinity will probably aim to determine whether high-level communication is one of your strengths. RSM's recruiters advise you to "Practice a mock interview with friends or family members." If that isn't an option, record yourself and practice how you will answer. Try to eliminate any bad habits, like overusing any speech crutch words such as "like," "um," "you know," and others. Try to strike an even tone and volume, and avoid mumbling. Be as succinct as possible and only take as much time as you need. Try not to run out the clock or allow it to cut you off.
Written by Kevin Downey on April 9th, 2023
Entry Level Example
"Just recently, I was explaining to my parents how not all plastics are recyclable, and when they place bags into their recycling, it most often results in the whole batch being thrown away. I heard the term 'wish-cycling' used. So, when they asked how they are supposed to know which types of plastics they could recycle, I didn't have the heart to explain how each classification of plastic varies so greatly in its chemical formula that most of their plastics aren't recycled. So I explained that if they truly wanted to reduce the environmental impact of what they recycle, they should buy products that come in glass or metal containers or no container at all."

Compatibility
10. How would you approach making a client's business stronger?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
This question aims to gauge your experience level and whether you are ready for this role with RSM. How you answer will allow them to assess how compatible your work style and approach are with theirs. Learn everything you can about their approach, and make sure your answer is aligned with their core values, key behaviors, and code of conduct. "We consistently act to protect our reputation and deliver service in a way that is aligned with our values and what our clients and the marketplace expect from RSM."
Written by Kevin Downey on April 9th, 2023
What You Need to Know
RSM advertises to their potential clients that their employees will "discover useful ideas and relevant perspectives specific to you and your business." So, their ideal candidates will have no issues upholding their reputation and being able to follow through on their commitments. As one customer testimonial on their website says, "It's not about having the data. It's about having a partner like RSM to work with that data and make it functional. We now understand how to use data to make our business stronger."
Written by Kevin Downey on April 9th, 2023
Tips
Try to make your responses as structured and concise as possible. Avoid rambling or delivering roundabout answers. This is why it is recommended to use the STAR method when structuring your answers. Address each answer by first offering the SITUATION involved with your example. Then move into the TASK this situation required. Then share the ACTION you took and the RESULT of your actions. This will add structure to your answers.
Written by Kevin Downey on April 9th, 2023
Answer Example
"I would take the time to truly understand my client's needs by listening to them and examining the data. I would explain in a relatable way what needed to be done and chart the best path forward and the results they could expect, backed up by data. I would address their pain points and expectations and ensure their needs were met by taking the most innovatively conservative approach."

11. What makes you the right candidate for this position?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
It is common practice to customize your resume and CV to each company and the position you are applying for. However, once you land that interview, your preparation should never stop there. Even though this sounds like common sense, too often, candidates fail to put in the work necessary to prepare for the interview. So make sure you not only perform your research on the position and the company you are applying for, in this case, RSM. But also perform all the necessary research on yourself. This should include your customized resume and CV, your work history and experience that didn't make it onto those pages, and everything you have to offer that lines up with what they are looking for in an ideal candidate. And as Cappfinity says on their site, "We identify talent so we can help businesses put their strengths to work."
Written by Kevin Downey on April 9th, 2023
What You Need to Know
In that interview tips article in RSM's Newsroom, they state, "Preparation is definitely the key. Nurturing local talent is of particular importance to us. Finding the right people for our team is crucial, but too often someone who looks like a great candidate on paper lets themselves down by a lack of interview preparation. However, despite there being plenty of information about training opportunities made available to candidates, we find on many occasions that having received a promising CV, applicants are ill-prepared for the interview process."
Written by Kevin Downey on April 9th, 2023
Tips
When speaking, moderate your tone, and try to come across as confident, relaxed, and in your comfort zone. Choose your words with care and align the keywords or phrases you'd use to describe yourself with those RSM uses to identify their culture. Use professional adjectives to describe yourself and your situation, such as career focussed, ambitious, persistent, genuine, patient, enthusiastic, disciplined, and passionate. Some of the keywords RSM uses are real, professional, innovative, understanding, respectful, authentic, and collaborative.

Competency
13. What do you know about our company?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
Questions like these can be difficult to answer due to how vague they are or how broadly they can be interpreted. Come prepared with some knowledge of the company's history, how they currently rank against their competitors, or any accomplishments they've advertised in the news or the media.
Written by Kevin Downey on April 9th, 2023

"RSM can trace its origins all the way back to 1926 when Ira McGladrey founded his accounting firm, the I.B. McGladrey company. Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
The scope of the services RSM has to offer the industries they serve is broad. Familiarize yourself with as much company information as possible so you appear well-equipped. However, it may not be necessary to recite all the services they offer and simply relay the services relevant to the position you are applying for. Or you could limit yourself to the information they showcase on one page but demonstrate your knowledge that they offer a variety of other services to varying industries.
Written by Kevin Downey on April 9th, 2023

Creative Thinking
15. How do you approach showcasing your thought leadership and offering innovative strategies to your clients?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
RSM has a reputation for being a "powerhouse of collaborative innovation for middle market companies looking to gain a competitive edge." The interviewer asks this question to determine how well your brand of thought leadership and innovation will represent their company and align with the reputation they aim to uphold. "When we provide thought leadership through interaction with clients and industry groups, we recognize that we represent the firm and act accordingly. At RSM, we invite talented professionals to join us who will bring care and curiosity as we collaborate with clients to deliver real innovation."
Written by Kevin Downey on April 9th, 2023
What You Need to Know
The assessment vendor, Cappfinity, advertises that they perceive creativity as a strength. But it is also important to learn how RSM innovates strategies for their clients and align your approach to innovation with theirs. So research the company, this opportunity, and yourself, and offer an answer that strikes that balance.
Written by Kevin Downey on April 9th, 2023
Tips
This question goes beyond providing you with an opportunity to showcase your strengths. It is akin to asking how you would build relationships with your coworkers or clients when onboarding. It requires striking a balance between being ambitious and eager to contribute to your company and exhibiting humility, learning the rules and how they do things, familiarizing yourself with what they built, and collaborating from there.
Written by Kevin Downey on April 9th, 2023
Answer Example
"I showcase my thought leadership by understanding my clients' needs, being a powerhouse of information, and having the knowledge of every resource available to usher in their greater success. I would, of course, do this, acting with the code of conduct and in an ethical manner that would preserve my company's reputation."

Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
Pay attention to how each question is phrased, as they often offer clues for how to answer the question. For example, the term 'client-centric' comes directly from RSM's website, where they state that their "client-centric focus differentiates us from other firms because it starts with each individual client. We seek to understand their business aspirations and then use perspectives gathered from other clients and our past experience to help them confidently navigate an ever-changing market environment to reach their goals." Therefore, how you answer this question could reveal how sharp your attention to detail is and whether you picked up on that clue, how prepared you arrived for this interview, and how aligned your approach to customer service is to theirs.

What You Need to Know
Their definition of a client-centric approach goes on to say, "At RSM, it's all about creating a great client experience. We strive to instill confidence in a world of change by building strong relationships based on a deep understanding of our clients' businesses and aspirations and delivering value through relevant ideas, insights, and solutions."

Tips
When researching their website, you'll be able to find language that effectively answers many of the questions posed throughout your interview set. Take note of their language and value statements. Integrate their language into your answers naturally when possible. This will inform them that you've identified them as an ideal match for what you are looking for and already embrace their culture and values.

Experienced Example
"It is similar to Jeff Bezos' definition of being customer obsessed. You have to be driven to understand their business, what they've prided themselves on building there, what their aspirations are, and constantly be fueled to find new ways of how you can help them best. You have to care."

Customer Service
18. Tell me about the last time you delivered excellent customer service.
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
This question not only offers you an opportunity to showcase your strengths in serving your customers and delivering an outstanding experience; it also allows you to align your customer service approach and philosophy with theirs. Of course, you don't want to come across as rehearsed or blatantly copy their language. Instead, you want to communicate your unique approach in a way that will resonate with them and showcases what you have to offer their clients.
Written by Kevin Downey on April 9th, 2023
What You Need to Know
Consider RSM's trademarked approach to their customer service, "Experience the power of being understood." They define how they deliver the power of being understood by their 5 C's, "Caring. Curious. Collaborative. Courageous. Critical-thinking." They call these the "Perspectives that inform your next step." They go on to state that their first-choice advisors are "Rooted in deep industry knowledge and technical acumen" and "bring diverse perspectives, innovative ideas and data-driven insights to our client collaborations. Every client, every day, in everything we do."

Tips
While preparing for your interview, you'll want to present yourself as a professional in every way. Keep in mind that your surroundings are also a reflection of you as a professional. Wear appropriate professional clothing suited to the role. Additionally, you'll want the focus to be on you and not your background. So make sure your space is organized, free of distractions, and work-appropriate. Leaving groceries in the hall, a messy bed behind you, or forgetting about something inappropriate behind you could suggest you lack attention to detail and are unorganized and unprofessional. The fewer distractions and the more minimalist your background is, the better.

Experienced Example
"The last time was only yesterday when a client came to me with a problem they had with what they perceived as a roadblock with their tax filings. They were upset. They thought a strategy I helped them implement wouldn't work because they left out some important information, and their accountant, when realizing this information was left out, said it wouldn't work. But, thanks to staying up to date on all the current laws and regulations, I had become aware of a new program that addressed this very problem and was able to coordinate with their accountant directly to help them navigate this hurdle."

Diligence
19. How do you stay current on public policy, regulation, and the latest trending news?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
This question not only aims to assess your experience and ambition but your familiarity with the resources and reputation RSM has to offer its clients. A representative of their company will be expected to offer their clients their services, such as the latest news from RSM, passing on information about RSM's upcoming or past events, where they offer ideas and observations to help advance their client's businesses, or upcoming webcasts, virtual and in-person events, or in what ways RSM has been "actively engaged on Capitol Hill and elsewhere to ensure the voice of the middle market is heard amid the D.C. shuffle."

What You Need to Know
The assessment vendor will study your performance, so be transparent and honest. Never try to fake your way through a question. They'll likely analyze your verbal cues and be able to identify if you're exaggerating or not being completely honest. There are many tells that people aren't conscious of, such as repeating a question before answering, speaking in sentence fragments, displaying a change in speech pattern, irregular speech, and rising and falling tone. When your words don't match your gestures, your gestures will reveal the truth. Maintain eye contact and confident body language, be comfortable, and speak from the heart.
Written by Kevin Downey on April 9th, 2023
Tips
A good exercise for preparing for any interview is to make lists of everything you do as a professional. Not only every aspect of your job, every skill acquired, and every responsibility you've been entrusted with. But also how you stay informed, ahead of the game, and ensure you remain a trusted source of information for your clients and peers - everything you can think of that defines you as a professional.

"Aside from my subscriptions to the usual periodicals, I subscribe to several newsletters, from the FED to the Central Banker Newsletter. I subscribe to RSM's newsletter and follow their insights, media, and articles."

Diversity
20. How comfortable are you working in an inclusive and diverse team?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
RSM largely defines their culture by how they embrace diversity and inclusion, not only of their employees but the clients they represent as a global company. This question tests your cultural competence and how well you would be able to represent their company.
"We celebrate talent, embrace each other's differences and genuinely care about our team members' success. To sustain our culture with intention, we devote teams and resources to support learning, understanding, diversity, inclusion, and the talent experience. We care for and support one another, fostering an unrivaled, inclusive culture and talent experience that encourages each of us to bring our authentic self to work every day. We celebrate the differences among our talented employees. When we bring those unique talents and perspectives together, it strengthens our teams and enhances the unique insights we provide our clients."

What You Need to Know
Cappfinity advertises how their services provide equal opportunity. "Selecting from strengths is naturally bias-free because our strengths are inherent and authentic to who we are. When you hire based on their strengths, you level the playing field for all underrepresented candidates." Their assessments may evaluate you on your cultural competence and how well you would be able to represent RSM's brand.
Written by Kevin Downey on April 9th, 2023
Tips
Conveying cultural competence requires interest, openness, and curiosity. Nonverbal indicators for these emotions are leaning in, tilting your head as you speak, smiling, and making eye contact. Signs of discomfort and avoidance could be interpreted as negative bias and antipathy. Such nonverbal cues include decreased positivity, less eye contact and more gaze aversion, fewer smiles, greater interpersonal distance, and increased blinking. Consider these points when formulating your answer.

Answer Example
"I would be completely comfortable. I would say the more diverse the perspective of my teams, the more likely I will be able to learn, grow, and excel as a professional."
Written by Kevin Downey on April 10th, 2023
Education
21. Tell me about your educational journey.
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
When answering questions about your educational journey (another key phrase used by RSM), remember that one's educational journey is never-ending. Someone who takes charge of their development will always ask questions, take every opportunity to grow and expand their skill set, and have their eye on the big picture of furthering their career. So when answering this question, don't limit yourself to your formal education or on-the-job experience; discuss what you hope to learn from this opportunity with RSM. "Ready to take the next step? Let's get started. No matter where you are on your educational journey, engage with us, gain experience, and explore a future at RSM."
Written by Kevin Downey on April 9th, 2023
What You Need to Know
Be mindful of how much information, or how little, you've already provided. You want to offer context and breathe additional life into your professional history without being redundant. Take the advice of RSM's recruiters, and "review your resume and have it on hand during your interview." In an RSM Newsroom article, they state, "There is nothing worse than asking an applicant about information contained on their CV, only for them to stare blankly back at you. Know your CV inside-out and be able to talk about each aspect of your background and recent experiences. Try to anticipate questions an interviewer might ask you about information contained in your CV. This will help you present a well-considered response to almost inevitable questions."
Written by Kevin Downey on April 9th, 2023
Tips
You always want to be in the position of seeming prepared to answer the question posed while exuding confidence and communicating clearly. Enunciate your words, avoiding stutters or long pauses. Sounding too rehearsed likewise can make you sound wooden and boorish. Practice in front of your computer's camera, trying not to look at yourself on the screen; instead, maintain eye contact with the camera lens as if you're speaking face-to-face with a person, and keep at it until you are relaxed and seem natural.
Written by Kevin Downey on April 9th, 2023
Answer Example
"I'm sure you are familiar with my resume, where I went to college, and the degree I earned. Also, I am sure you read about my education in the business world through my experience of working with my uncle as a child. But I would say my education hasn't nearly reached its end. My real-world experience has taught me just as much, if not more, than my formal education. This was a real motivator for pursuing this position with RSM."

22. How do you strike a balance between your work and personal life?
What You Need to Know
The more balanced your work and personal life are, the greater your job satisfaction and the less likely you'll burn out on the job. How you answer this question will offer insights into whether you will contribute to their goals for employee retention or contribute to attrition. RSM puts in efforts to contribute to their employees' work-life balance, but before considering any hire, they'll want to make sure that candidate contributes to their well-being as well.
Written by Kevin Downey on April 10th, 2023
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
Here are some of the value propositions RSM has on their website promoting their recruiting efforts, "At RSM, we make sure our people are empowered to be their best selves, both personally and professionally. This starts with understanding and caring for our people as individuals, their whole selves, and all areas of their life. Join a community that supports and inspires you to prioritize your well-being while we deliver personalized, holistic programming for your physical, emotional, financial, and community well-being."
Written by Kevin Downey on April 10th, 2023
Tips
When preparing to be interviewed from home, your surroundings may be perceived as a reflection of your work-life balance. So, you'll want to make sure your appearance and personal space are consistent with your claims of being organized, professional, stable, and reliable. Consider the space you choose for your online interview as a reflection of your professionalism and work ethic. Choose a space that is clear of distractions, is not cluttered, and is neat, tidy, and organized.
Written by Kevin Downey on April 10th, 2023
Experienced Example
"I manage the balance between my work and personal life by being self-aware. For example, if you are working from home, are super focussed on work, and haven't noticed that your home is getting a little messy, you won't realize your surroundings are impacting your motivation and mental well-being. In this circumstance, your home and your work are the same. So, let's say I'm working at the office, then I will make sure I am prepared in every way. I'll prepare or plan for my lunch, will prepare for my morning, and prepare for my personal time as well. I balance both spheres by setting aside time to dedicate to that balance. I call it in-between time."

23. What are your weaknesses?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
Consider offering those growth opportunities you are already actively working on. It is even better if you can offer a strength as a weakness. Being a perfectionist is a strength but can also be a weakness if it interferes with your time management. When trying to think of what to volunteer as a weakness, look through your previous performance reviews and see what it says there. Also, explore Cappfinity's brochure on Strengths Profiles on The World's Strengths for ideas, especially since they list the most common weaknesses of each of the five strengths families.
Written by Kevin Downey on April 10th, 2023
What You Need to Know
When sharing your self-perceived weaknesses, the more ownership you take, the more emotionally intelligent you will seem. Someone who is hesitant to volunteer their weaknesses, fearing they'll be exposed or exploited, may be less likely to take ownership or grow professionally. However, someone who is hesitant to volunteer their weaknesses out of a fear of seeming weak may be perceived as having less mastery of their emotions. By constantly developing yourself professionally and taking ownership of your growth opportunities, you'll seem more driven. This showcases not your weaknesses but your strengths. No one can hold over you what you already own. As RSM advertises on their career site, "There's no one like you, and that's why there's nowhere like RSM. Our people are empowered to make an impact, to own their career, and to achieve their personal and professional aspirations."
Written by Kevin Downey on April 10th, 2023
Tips
RSM's recruiters suggest you set your computer up in "a quiet place with limited disruptions and natural lighting." You'll want as little background noise as possible. Also, when discussing your weaknesses, make sure your camera angle is at eye level. Positioning it too high may make you seem small, whereas setting it too high may make you seem domineering. Also, be mindful of your facial expressions. Avoid furrowing your brow while concentrating. You want to make sure you are comfortable in every way and come across as 'at ease.'
Written by Kevin Downey on April 10th, 2023
Experienced Example
"I'd say one of my weaknesses is that I try too hard to be there for my clients in a bind and work super hard to rescue them. I am aware of this and have gotten stronger at reiterating the training I have provided for them to use the tools to remedy these issues more swiftly on their own. I have improved quite a bit but have a little further to go before it becomes habitual."

24. What are your strengths?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
The self-assessed strengths you pride yourself on should contribute to your job satisfaction. When you are good at what you do, you enjoy doing it and strive to continually improve. If you have trouble identifying your strengths, consider what your coworkers, teammates, friends, and family members have said about you in the past. Lastly, evaluate the strengths RSM looks for and celebrates in their employees and how your strengths align with those.
Written by Kevin Downey on April 10th, 2023
What You Need to Know
Cappfinity centers the branding of their assessments around identifying their clients' strengths. They try to identify "what you can do, as well as what you enjoy doing." Cappfinity looks at strengths as "the things that we do well and find energizing, they are found in every person. Strengths can be interpersonal, like Rapport Builder. Strengths can be about how we think, like creativity. Strengths can be how we are motivated, like Drive. When people are in roles that enable them to use their strengths, they are happier, more engaged at work, and achieve higher levels of performance. Using your strengths regularly increases your well-being, confidence, resilience, and overall life satisfaction."
Written by Kevin Downey on April 10th, 2023
Tips
Your non-verbal cues will reveal how much you believe in what you are communicating verbally. Therefore, your non-verbal cues often hold more weight and are almost always interpreted as your true feelings, intentions, and attitude. When words and statements are incongruent with your tone, facial expressions, or mannerisms, it can further suggest a lack of self-awareness and emotional intelligence. Take the advice given by RSM's recruiters, who advise "candidates should avoid fidgeting and playing with their hair. Make sure you smile and make eye contact. It's all about looking confident." They advise, "Be engaged, look at the screen, and use non-verbal cues to show you're listening. Most importantly, be yourself!"

Pro Tip
Read Cappfinity's brochure on Strengths Profiles on The World's Strengths. This will come in handy, especially when you decide to counterbalance your strengths with your weaknesses. It will also offer insight into how their 'Strengths Profile' works. For example, did you know there are five family classifications of the most and least common realized and unrealized strengths, learned behaviors, and weaknesses across the globe? Cappfinity breaks this down into "Being; Our way of being in the world. Communicating; How we give and receive information. Motivating; Our drive towards action. Relating; How we relate to others. Thinking; Our approach to situations."
Written by Kevin Downey on April 10th, 2023
Answer Example
"I would say that I have a great attitude, am often able to inject clean humor into any situation, am a strong communicator, am humble, am creative and innovative, am great at building relationships, and have strong time management skills."

Leadership
25. Tell me about a time you went the extra mile to help a coworker succeed.
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
Your interviewer asks this question to determine your work ethic and how you pursue your ambitions. How you answer will tell them if you view those on your team as competition and will do anything you can to climb to the top. This personality type seems contrary to what they are looking for in a candidate. Based on how RSM defines their culture, they are more interested in those who view their accomplishments as not when they succeed as an individual but succeed through collaboration. The team's success is their success. This question offers you an opportunity when you embraced this mentality and went the extra mile to help a teammate succeed, which in turn benefitted the team as a whole. All for one, and one for all.
Written by Kevin Downey on April 10th, 2023
What You Need to Know
RSM advertises, "We empower you to personalize your development opportunities and encourage you to take an active role in enriching your RSM experience. We strive to ensure everyone feels included, diverse perspectives are valued and everyone has a chance to grow a vibrant career at RSM. Caring is truly core to our culture. You're not just a number here. People genuinely care about you and will go the extra mile to help you succeed. Find out how we can help you achieve your professional goals. At RSM, we work every day to promote a transparent, caring, and authentic environment that fosters meaningful connections, and to create an equitable and inclusive firm where diverse talent excels."
Written by Kevin Downey on April 10th, 2023
Tips
Try to convey that going the extra mile for your team is your status quo. When delivering your answer, look as if you are in your comfort zone, and exude friendly confidence, smiling with both your mouth and your eyes. Keep your body language open and your tone steady, even, and consistent with your statements. Looking at yourself on the screen could be interpreted as looking down, which is a sign of lacking confidence.
Written by Kevin Downey on April 10th, 2023
Experienced Example
"I would say that this is my constant mode. It's a way of being. If I notice a member of my team is working harder rather than smarter, I show them a better way. If you know how to do something well, why be the envy of others? Show them how to be as good as you. I am always mentoring and coaching. This is my go-to. You'd be surprised how your team adopts this mentality and reciprocates. As a result, I am always learning from them as well."
Written by Kevin Downey on April 10th, 2023
Leadership
26. What is your leadership style?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
This question aims to reveal what brand of leadership works best for you and whether that would complement RSM's core values, key behaviors, and code of conduct. So before your interview, take time to evaluate their culture and how their principles align with your leadership style.
Written by Kevin Downey on April 10th, 2023
What You Need to Know
RSM puts a great deal of effort into creating "an environment that attracts, engages, and develops future leaders." In their code of conduct, they detail some of the expectations they have for their leaders. Not only do they expect their leaders to develop the future leaders of their company, "We support our people in their career development through mentoring, training, and on-the-job learning opportunities." They also detail a few of the special responsibilities they expect of them, "Appropriately address the behavior of people on your team. Communicate in word and deed the values and principles of the firm and the profession. Promote a workplace environment that encourages frank, respectful, and open communication, free from reprisal."
Written by Kevin Downey on April 10th, 2023
Tips
You want to come across as emotionally mature, capable of exhibiting empathy, and a strong communicator. Nonverbal cues for empathy are slightly tilting your head, nodding slowly, keeping your palms open, maintaining eye contact, smiling softly, and slightly raising your eyebrows. Posture yourself in a relaxed and comfortable position.
Written by Kevin Downey on April 10th, 2023
Answer Example
"I would say that I am a transformative influencer. I like to motivate my team by reminding them why we do the work we do."
Written by Kevin Downey on April 10th, 2023
Salary
27. What kind of salary are you hoping for?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
It is less than ideal to give a definitive answer to this question when not being interviewed by a person. Definitively answering this question in an online assessment will close the door to negotiation. But choosing to not answer this question, when done so diplomatically, doesn't hurt your chances of landing another interview. It is all about how you answer this question. You don't want to shoot for the stars, but you don't want to sell yourself short, either. It's a dance, and those who dance well are more aware of their professional worth.
Written by Kevin Downey on April 10th, 2023
What You Need to Know
Most of RSM's employees are eligible for an annual bonus or incentive compensation program, 401(k) company match, a health savings account, education reimbursement, parking, and mass transit reimbursement, a 529 savings plan, consumer discounts, long- and short-term disability, life insurance coverage, among other generous benefits. Additionally, most of their job postings advertise the salary range they will pay you based on your experience or professional worth. Examine their offerings and carefully factor them in before coming up with a number.
Written by Kevin Downey on April 10th, 2023
Tips
The best, and most diplomatic approach, is to speak to what you are currently paid, how frequently you receive pay increases, and your projected income over the next year. Explain that you currently receive a generous benefits package and have researched the benefits RSM offers and their salary range. Tell your interviewer that you feel you could be fairly compensated for your professional worth and are open to discussing this further.
Written by Kevin Downey on April 10th, 2023
Experienced Example
"I understand that RSM has already performed their performance reviews, and the next one is quite a ways out. I currently earn $$$ and receive a pay increase twice a year of roughly #%. I project my income will be roughly $$$ by next year. Considering RSM's benefits package is similar to what I currently receive, I feel the salary range posted on the job listing is fair, considering the broad range of experience one can have for the role. I feel like, after further discussion, we could come to a fair number that equals my professional worth and meets my expectations within this range."
Written by Kevin Downey on April 10th, 2023
Stress
28. How do you manage your stress?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
How you answer this question will potentially offer insights into whether emotional intelligence is one of your strengths. A person who has trouble in stressful situations will be more prone to feeling overwhelmed and suffer from task paralysis or task procrastination. This can not only slow down your productivity but that of the team. So, describe how you approach and control your stress levels and the measures you take to stay productive and think on your feet.
Written by Kevin Downey on April 10th, 2023
What You Need to Know
An article on RSM's website advertises their support for an organization called Active Minds. Their mission is "to end the silence and change the conversation about mental health for everyone." RSM advertises more than once on their career pages that they place a great deal of value on the wellbeing and mental health of their employees; "Join a community that supports and inspires you to prioritize your wellbeing." On RSM's website, they quote a saying of Active Minds: "Self Care is not selfish.
Written by Kevin Downey on April 10th, 2023
Tips
It isn't uncommon for a person to experience stress when recalling stressful situations. So when answering this question, be mindful of your nonverbal cues, and don't express body language that may inadvertently betray your narrative of staying calm under pressure. Practice and meditate on those moments you acted decisively and drove success for your teams. Reflecting on your best moments, convey how you managed your stress in those best of times. Focus on the pride of that moment and let your confidence and emotional maturity shine.
Written by Kevin Downey on April 10th, 2023
Experienced Example
"I neither bottle stress up nor unleash it. I carry it with the weight of everything else in a stressful situation. I think the most valuable thing you can do when in a stressful situation is to carry your stress and be aware of it. It helps maintain your focus, especially when the stress of others in that situation takes hold of them. In being focused, you can help others reestablish their focus when they've lost it."

Teamwork
29. Tell me about the last time you suggested an improvement to help your teams.
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
This question not only aims to determine whether you are capable of creative thinking, innovation, and thinking outside the box. It also aims to reveal your tact, communication skills, and methodology for suggesting change. It is one thing to ask questions and gain a complete understanding of why things are currently done the way they are; it is another to make suggestions for change, trying to reinvent the wheel when that suggestion has been made a hundred times before, and with greater humility.

What You Need to Know
Here are a few of the value propositions RSM states in their recruiting efforts to draw their ideal talent. "At RSM, we invite talented professionals to join us who will bring care and curiosity as we collaborate with clients to deliver real innovation. Together, we find answers. Innovating with our clients, our colleagues, and our communities. Everyone can drive real change."

Answer Example
"Recently, I felt that the morning huddles with my teams were not working. There were still instances where communication was dropping and couldn't wait until the next day. So I suggested they join a working platform like Slack so they could constantly pass the baton in live time. This eliminated a lot of the recaps and complaints that occurred in the huddle, increased their focus on productivity, and shortened the meetings by twenty minutes."

Teamwork
30. How would you define teamwork?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
To answer this question effectively, it is just as important to perform research on yourself as it is on the company you are interviewing for. You want to identify how your experiences as part of a team align with RSM's work environment and culture. Your answer should be sincere and play to your strengths as a team player. Think back on those experiences where you felt most satisfied working as part of a team. Examine those experiences where the camaraderie was rewarding and how placing the needs of the team above your own needs defined your success.
Written by Kevin Downey on April 10th, 2023
What You Need to Know
Here is how RSM defines their brand of teamwork on their careers page: "Success is both professional and personal. It just feels good here. We foster an environment of camaraderie, collaboration, and learning, one in which you can be your authentic self and feel seen and supported by leaders and colleagues as you pursue your personal and professional best. Expanding our team with dedicated teammates, values-driven individuals, and diverse thinkers results in better work and a great work experience. Our clients benefit from fresh insights and energy as we partner to support them, and our teams enjoy a work environment that inspires and empowers them to thrive."
Written by Kevin Downey on April 10th, 2023
Experienced Example
"I define success exactly as RSM defines it. There is no greater success than when the team feels proud of their accomplishments for the day, feels camaraderie with their fellow teammates, and looks forward to getting back to work and riding the high of that sense of accomplishment the next day, and the day after that."
