One of the reasons you want to ensure you are in a quiet and distraction-free environment is to ensure the HireVue algorithm doesn't inadvertently misinterpret your response to distractions in your environment as body language responses to the questions posed. For example, if something distracts your gaze, this could be perceived as avoiding eye contact, which is considered an indicator of discomfort or avoidance, negative bias, and antipathy. Other such cues are fewer smiles, greater interpersonal distance, and increased blinking. Conveying cultural competence requires interest, openness, and curiosity. So, lean in, tilt your head as you speak, smile, and make eye contact with the camera.
