The interviewer wants to understand how you handle mistakes and failures. They know that no one is perfect and will expect you to have some experience with an unsuccessful project; the key to this question is to demonstrate your ability to navigate challenge and learn from your mistakes. Be honest and share the details of a campaign that didn't turn out as you had hoped. Most importantly, discuss the lessons that you learned from it.
"Early on when I was new to this field and to my career, I ran a campaign that didn't perform as I had expected. It was a social media campaign for a small client who didn't have a large budget. In the end, our social media messaging didn't engage the customers as we had hoped, and we didn't meet our conversion goal. Looking back on it, I realize that we didn't spend enough time researching and understanding our target audience and what appealed to them. This is a lesson that I carried forward with me and have applied to every campaign since then: learn as much as you can about your target audience so the messaging you create engages them."
