The interviewer is putting you on the spot with this scenario-based question. They want to see how quickly you think on your feet as well as how well you are able to understand the role and prioritize. Prior to the interview, be sure to review the job description and research the company to help inform answers to questions like this one. Then, think about the steps you would take in the first few months on the job so you're prepared if asked.
"Before anything, I'd be so excited to meet my coworkers and set up my workspace! I believe strong relationships and a positive environment are key to success. The first action I'd take beyond that would be to meet with my manager to clarify my objectives for the first 90 days or so. The next thing I'd do is move toward nailing down the positioning of the company by defining what it does, what problems it solves, and why this is important to its customers. Ideally, I'd talk to customers to determine that the value-adds they receive mimic the positioning that we share on the website and in presentations. Finally, I'd create a customer journey map so I can determine every interaction a customer has with our business, and I'd talk with people from various departments within the company to build our relationship and to learn from them."
