Border patrol officers must have excellent communication skills, both verbally and written. On a scale of 1 to 10, the interviewer wants to know how skilled you are in communication to determine if you have the skills they seek in a candidate. Rate your communication skills and describe why you chose that rating for yourself.

"I rate my communication skills as a 9/10 as I will, on occasion, have times when I am not as clear as I would like to be. My supervisor and coworkers will attest to my clear and concise communication skills. Because I am an open leader, my team will let me know if I need to clarify anything."

"I will rate myself an eight because I value communication, but, just like most people, I have things to learn. I ensure clear communication by utilizing multiple methods of delivering messages, and I give ample time for questions before implementing changes."

"I will rate myself an 8.5 because I consider myself a strong communicator. It is the foundation of all business success. I am always striving to be a better communicator, so I leave the rest of the scale as an aspirational measure."

Focus on rating yourself and backing up your rating. If you gave yourself a lower number than a 10, describe what areas you would like to improve.

I would give myself a 9, and my time working in a correctional institution enlightened me to this. While I was in several uses of force, I often prevented them before they occurred. While working at the Transitional Care unit, I had a unique ability to talk mentally ill people and dementia patients through doing what I needed them to do. My favorite was a dementia patient in his late 60's who had been a teacher. He tried to move from his bed to go to work. I told him that I did not want to embarrass him, but it was Saturday. It worked!

Oh my goodness, what a clever approach with your dementia patient. Your communication skills are obviously on point. Your responses are top-notch.

I would use communication skills at 8 out of ten. I am from another country where even though English is our primary language, we rarely speak it regularly.

That's totally fair! If you could do something to boost your communication skills, what would that be?

I would rate my communication skills an 8.5 out of 10. I normally do well on expressing my opinion or delivering a message but there is always room for improvement. At my current job, we often have to deliver unfortunate news such as increased payments & in some instances the possibility of having their case dismissed with the risk of losing their homes or vehicles sometimes both. For the most part, I already have options or a Plan B in place to try to help with their decision & minimize the damage to the best of my ability. I follow a pattern of problems, options, and solutions in each scenario & it works wonderfully!

Great! This rating sounds fair and you back it up with good examples. You might consider going into more detail about exactly how you effectively communicate the unfortunate news in terms of the tone of voice and words you choose to use. Your problem, options, solutions process definitely sounds useful! Also, you might give another rating or at least include a mention of your writing ability (which seems to be very good!)
