This question challenges you to think about how you act as a leader in your daily life. Even if you're not leading a team, you can still demonstrate the qualities of a leader! The interviewer wants to hear that you have the leadership qualities they seek in a border patrol officer.
You can be a motivator and a confident communicator in any situation at work! Give an example of how you coached a coworker who had difficulty preparing for a big presentation. Maybe you gave them confidence in their strengths by encouraging them, or perhaps you offered some helpful hints.

"Just last month, I was asked to lead a shift when my superior officer was unexpectedly away. I took charge for two days, and the experience was quite positive. I believe the biggest success factor was that I tried to emulate his leadership style and asked for his help when I wasn't sure what to do. I feel this experience prepared me for a leadership role. I am excited to take on a team lead role again."

"Yes, I do. It's so important always to be leading by example, and you never know who is watching. That applies to stepping foot in the unit or behaving on social media when you are tied to law enforcement. No matter the situation or where you find yourself, you act accordingly to be a real leader."

"I feel I'm always leading by example, with or without managerial authority. I always try to come in a bit early and stay a bit late, pitching in and going the extra mile whenever possible. I feel this makes you just a good teammate and human, setting you up for a strong career trajectory. That way, when the opportunity for a true leadership role presents itself, I have positioned myself to be top of mind for the promotion."

If you have worked as a border patrol officer or in another area of law enforcement, focus on giving an example from your industry. If you are new to the field, provide an example of how you have demonstrated leadership qualities at church, school, sports, or a previous job.

I do demonstrate leadership quality when I am not in the role. For example, I set the standard through my actions, communications, and, most importantly, by how I respond to negative situations.

Rachelle's Feedback
These are all excellent ways to demonstrate leadership even when you are not in a leadership role.

Yes, I definitely try to. Leading by example has always been a key component for me in life. I've always aimed to be a good role model for my siblings as best I can and in my daily life in general. I do believe that demonstrating leadership qualities even when not in a leadership role is essential as it speaks volumes of a person's values and character and I believe it has helped me become who I am today. Additionally, demonstrating such qualities will open a number of opportunities for oneself. It's definitely good to prepare because we never know when we might need to step up to the role especially in a career like this one where unexpected or spontaneous situations may arise at any given time.
Marcie's Feedback
It definitely sounds like you have demonstrated leadership qualities in everyday life (i.e., when taking care of your siblings). Perhaps you can talk a bit about what type of leadership qualities you tend to embody (e.g., good communication, having a vision, being empathetic, having accountability, expressing gratitude, etc.)
