The interviewer wants to know if you consider yourself to be an emotionally driven person. Talk to the interviewer about your emotions and if they have ever affected your work. Remember that almost everyone is an emotional creature to some degree, which is an excellent trait to have as a healthcare professional. However, you must be able to keep your emotions under control so as not to interfere with your job.

"Everyone is emotional to a certain degree, and I consider myself kind-hearted and open. A healthcare career can sometimes be emotional; however, I choose to focus on the positives. For instance - if we are close to losing a patient, I will focus on the positive memories rather than the illness. This mindset has consistently allowed me to continue with a productive shift no matter the emotions that come my way."

"This is a great question. We've all had those tough cases. A child dies, a patient yells at you, or you must give someone bad news. It is professional to take a few minutes after an encounter like that and let those emotions come and go. I cope with these emotions by telling myself that it's not my story; it's the patient's story. I think it's okay to be moved by someone else's experience, but I don't need to make it mine. Having this mindset keeps my emotions from interfering with my job."

While I do consider myself an emotional person, I am able to keep my emotions at bay while working. While pregnant, I struggled a little bit, but with support from my current organisation, I was able to take some time off when needed. I'm not afraid to speak up if I am struggling.

Rachelle's Feedback
Your openness to discuss this topic, along with the fact that you have the strength to take care of yourself when needed, shows a lot of maturity and wisdom. Good answer! When it comes to the emotions of your day to day work life, what approaches do you use to keep emotions at bay, and when do you feel it's healthy and appropriate to acknowledge these emotions?

While emotions are inherent in the healthcare industry, I have developed strategies to manage them effectively. Through self-awareness, empathy, and self-care practices, I ensure that my emotions do not interfere with my job performance. Additionally, I have sought guidance from professionals to gain further insight and support in managing my emotions in the workplace. With these measures in place, I remain dedicated to delivering quality care while addressing the emotional aspects of the job.
