Any successful healthcare organization is based on relationships, whether those relationships are between coworkers or between caregivers and patients. Your interviewer will be looking to hear that you fully understand that building solid relationships is the foundation to success in the healthcare industry. Ensure that your example demonstrates how you built a solid relationship with an individual or a team and how the relationship directly influenced a positive outcome.

"The biggest thing that I am most grateful for as I look back on my healthcare career is the relationships I have built with the individuals I cared for and the colleagues I worked with. Having been a nurse in a small rural area early in my career, I remember caring for a woman who had been severely injured in a farming accident and lost an arm. During her stay on the unit, my casual conversations with the patient led me to discover that she was a competitive baker and had won several baking competitions in recent years. Knowing that her passion in life would be more difficult, I put her in contact with our OT group to help ease her transition back into life after discharge. In recent years, I run into her from time to time, and she always thanks me for the care that I provided and lets me know that she is still competing."

"When I was promoted to Director of Patient Services with my current organization, I knew it was important for me to build as many great relationships as possible with our specialty department leaders. On my first day on the job, I scheduled 1:1 meetings with them to get to know the leaders and their departments. On top of that, I asked what Patient Services could do for them to improve patients' overall satisfaction. I know that my approach to taking the lead in building these relationships helped forge the great working relationships that I have with these leaders to this day."

I built a great relationship with the education lead in my hospital. This has helped us to develop education programs that have benefitted the staff and the patients.

Rachelle's Feedback
Very good! It would be helpful to add in a sentence or two about the education programs that you developed.

At work, I've built positive relationships with the other anaesthetic nurses. It has helped our team because I know I can always count on the other nurses, and they can count on me. Recently, we had a difficult intubation at work, and I called on another nurse to help. Knowing I have good relationships with colleagues, I'm not afraid to ask for help; I know patient safety is our goal.

Rachelle's Feedback
It's terrific that you are not afraid to ask for help in the workplace! I am sure that this confidence benefits so many of your patients and colleagues. Since this question is framed as 'talk about a time...', the interviewer would be looking for a specific story-based response. This approach is one you can form using the STAR framework.

During my time working on a team project, I built a positive relationship with a fellow team member who had a different perspective and approach. By actively listening, respecting their ideas, and finding common ground, we were able to collaborate effectively and overcome challenges together. This positive relationship led to improved communication, increased trust, and ultimately, a successful outcome for the patient we were serving.

Jaymie's Feedback
This is a great start! Can you talk more about what the project focused on and what that positive outcome was for the patient?
