Since nonprofit organizations work with limited budgets, it is important to demonstrate your ability to negotiate for goods, services, and/or funding. You can also talk about negotiation in terms of salary requirements, benefits packages, job duties, and more.

"When I worked as a major gifts officer, I had the opportunity to meet with a potential donor who I learned during qualification was worth several million dollars. The potential donor reached out to me first and set up the meeting. He made no indication before the meeting what he would be willing to give, so I came up with a number based on his financial resources and past giving history. After meeting with him a few more times, I realized he had a personal connection to our mission to develop afterschool arts programs for at-risk youth. When I finally made my ask of 50,000, he was initially hesitant and countered with 40,000. I asked if he would be willing to donate 45,000 if we named the dance studio in our new building after him. He agreed."

"When I was preparing our largest fundraiser ever a few years ago, I was having a difficult time securing a caterer for the event. We wanted to feed 200 guests and needed a restaurant that could deliver local flavor for a discounted cost. All of the popular restaurants were booked. I did my research and discovered a brand new restaurant that had recently started a catering program and specialized in local cuisine. Since they were new, they were also trying to build their customer base and make a name for themselves. Their price point was way over budget, so I made a counter-offer and agreed to give their name and logo prime placement on the event programs and have the DJ make a special call-out during the event itself."

The goal in answering this question is to show your ability to compromise with rather than strong-arm someone. Your answer should reveal how you work with someone to come to an agreement instead of simply forcing them to accept what you want.
