Describe a time you had to communicate something complex to an audience uneducated in that particular topic. How did you explain the issue?

"I once had to present to our Board of Directors on the topic of social worker safety in the field. There had been a few incidents involving our social workers having things stolen from them on their way to client visits. I accompanied the social workers on their shift so I could understand what a typical shift looks like. Then, I reviewed our organization's current safety procedures and compared them with the training they received upon initial hiring. I discovered inconsistencies and worked to correct those. When I presented to the board, I carefully and clearly explained each step in this process so they could understand everything from start to finish and decide whether or not to approve of my recommended changes."

"As Chairman of the Technology Committee at my current organization, I was tasked with managing the rollout of new iPads and laptops to the managers of our congregate sites where we provide companionship to those living in nursing homes. Many of these managers are used to completing paperwork to log the day's events and have never utilized such technology. Many of them view such instruments as unnecessary interference in their work. I held a meeting with all the site managers and concisely explained how this technology would make their jobs easier, and I shared the ways they could seek additional technical support throughout the transition. Then, I made sure to pair each manager with one of our IT professionals for a few hours of training."

Don't forget to provide specific details about the way you broke down and explained something complex. Imagine that you are explaining to the interviewer the same way you would explain it to a trainee, audience member, or team member.
