What is the most competitive work situation you have experienced? How did you handle it? What was the result?

The interviewer asks this question to determine whether you function well in a competitive environment. Keep your example relevant to the work setting. They want to know if you thrive in situations where a little friendly competition is introduced in the workplace or prefer more camaraderie and collaboration in a team setting. In this regard, it's a plus if you cheered on your competitors or helped them reach their goals. Regardless of the competition, show the interviewer that you'll rise to any challenge and push yourself to perform at your best.

"My current sales position is highly commission-based, so my colleagues and I are quite competitive. Despite being competitive, we have a great work environment where we help each other when someone is struggling to meet their quota. We coach each other on sales techniques and share success stories. The result has been a positive work environment with healthy competition."

"Last year, I worked at a high-end jewelry store where sales goals were intense, and the rewards were high. I am geared for healthy competition, so when we had contests, it greatly motivated me. Working in the beverage industry you are always up against the competition. They would constantly offer their brands at a lower cost. My line of defense was selling them a quality product that was supported by their customer's loyalty to the brand.
