1. How do you handle situations that could cause you to be late or miss work?
What You Need to Know
Your interviewer wants to see how proactive you are when unexpected situations arise. How you handle situations that could cause you to be late or miss work is different than how well you manage your time and how proactive you are with arriving at work early or on time. Calling ahead to inform your employer you've run into an issue that could result in arriving to work late will indicate a sense of teamwork and forward thinking. Talk about your time management skills, your track record for being early, and your big-picture lens and sense of teamwork to give them a heads up while holding yourself accountable.
Written by Kevin Downey on July 31st, 2022
1st Answer Example
"I stay calm and composed when issues arise. My dad got rear-ended one time when driving me to school. I texted my friend to see if she could tell my teacher. I explained the situation to my teacher when I got to class. If this happened on my way to work, I would call ahead of time to ensure someone could cover my shift."
Written by Kevin Downey on July 31st, 2022
2nd Answer Example
"I hope never to be late! When I started working at a restaurant at sixteen, we were taught, 'if you're on time, you're late,' so I've worked to implement that into my life. I always try to arrive 15 minutes early, but unforeseen circumstances can arise. I handle surprises using common sense and keeping courtesy to others top of mind."

2. Do you have reliable transportation?
What You Need to Know
In most states, it is illegal to ask if you own a motor vehicle to prevent a potential employer from holding any bias. Not having a car shouldn't affect one's ability to perform their job. Most employers ask if you have reliable transportation because it is a legal way to ask this same question, which centers around your attendance.
Even if you're not expected to drive for the job, you will need reliable transportation to get to work on time. Too often, employees with issues surrounding their attendance will use their bus schedule being irregular or their ride-share not showing up as reasons beyond their control for showing up late to work. However, this is perceived as a reflection of their time management skills more than anything. Merely share that you have the means to get to work consistently and on time. You don't have to explain how you get to work, as long as you get to work early and have a strong track record with your attendance.
Written by Kevin Downey on July 31st, 2022
1st Answer Example
"I have reliable transportation. I have a well-maintained vehicle, and I am comfortable with the amount of travel required to get to your office every day."
2nd Answer Example
"I take public transit; however, I find it very reliable. I was late to work only once last year due to a snowstorm that stalled all of our employee's commute - including those with personal vehicles. Rest assured, I am reliable and always come to work on time."

3. We need reliable people on our team at Sysco. How many days were you absent from work last year?
What You Need to Know
Part of being a diligent employee is ensuring that you are always on time and present when expected. Your attendance impacts the rest of your team. Showing up early, getting the lay of the land, and warming up before you hit the ground running can shore up your success and that of the team. Showing up late can result in stress, panic, and confusion. It can also overburden others on your team who have to pick up your slack when you are running behind. Lastly, it could speak to your time management and organizational skills, as well as the value you place on your performance.
Written by Kevin Downey on July 31st, 2022
1st Answer Example
"I had zero unexcused absences last year. I took 12 vacation days out of my 15 allotted days. I was sick just 2, and a note from my Doctor accompanied those. Once I was late due to a terrible snow storm, but I always try to be 10 minutes early for my shift."
Written by Kevin Downey on July 31st, 2022
2nd Answer Example
"I am very committed to my employer and am only absent in events of sickness or the odd family emergency. I do my best always to be available and present when expected."

21. At Sysco, we have a very clear return policy. How would you handle a customer who was arguing with you about a potential return?
What You Need to Know
As a retail employee, you will come across customers who want to argue with store policy. Assure the interviewer that you can handle a situation like this with poise while keeping the customer happy and adhering to the company's needs. When a customer's approach or expectations contradict a company policy, it is crucial to examine the true meaning of the adage - the customer is always right. The true meaning is that the customer is always listened to, heard, empathized with, and handled with respect and care. This doesn't mean they are always right and should be granted their every demand. It means they are valued and treated with consideration, respect, and appreciation. But a customer service representative is truly a representative of a brand, and the core responsibility is to be true to the brand. Teamwork
31. Tell me about a time you worked with a diverse team.
What You Need to Know
Interviewers ask diversity questions to determine if you possess cultural competence. This is loosely defined as one's ability to understand, appreciate, and interact with people from cultures or belief systems different from your own. These days, it is widely accepted that building diverse teams fosters a more collaborative and innovative working environment. So, by gauging your response, they'll conclude how well you work with and relate to fellow team members from different backgrounds than your own.
Written by Kevin Downey on July 31st, 2022
Answer Example
"At one point, I worked at a store in a very diverse neighborhood. It was a pretty exciting experience in that everyone from different walks of life worked under one roof. It was probably the most dynamic and innovative crew I've ever worked with. Everything was outside of the box. We were a pretty great team. I still swing by and take the time to say hello when I'm in the area."

33. We have a strong employee honesty program in place at Sysco to prevent loss. What would you do if you discovered a co-worker stealing product or money?
What You Need to Know
Loss prevention initiatives are crucial in the retail sector. Although shrinkage is a common factor when fiscally projecting, every brick and mortar tries its best to prevent it. Not only do they want insights into your integrity, but they are also equally concerned if you would handle such a situation without compromising the integrity of their brand or presenting any further complications or legal challenges. Discuss with the interviewer how you would handle a situation surrounding employee theft with grace and discretion while respecting the chain of command and complying with the human resource's code of conduct. Be sure to avoid sounding self-righteous in your answer. Be diplomatic and refer to company protocol in such situations.
Written by Kevin Downey on July 31st, 2022
1st Answer Example
"My reaction to employee theft would differ if I were a retail associate or a retail manager. If I were a manager and caught an employee stealing, I would terminate them immediately. If I were an associate, I would report the incident according to company protocol. I would avoid approaching the employee as I would not want to make it a personal issue."
2nd Answer Example
"I value honesty, so if I saw a co-worker stealing, I would immediately tell my manager. Do you have a process in place for reporting these types of situations?"

34. How you would handle catching a work friend stealing?
What You Need to Know
You are responsible for your responses and actions, regardless of their behavior and ethics. The interviewer will want to see how you address this situation. You'll want to exhibit integrity, not only in how you view the crime but in how you treat that coworker, as you should treat anyone, with discretion and tact. They want to ensure you will act accordingly to the company's policy and reputation, and by safety and legal guidelines, without bringing it to the attention of non-managerial subordinates or customers.
Written by Kevin Downey on July 31st, 2022
Answer Example
"Depending on the circumstance, I would observe, collect evidence, pull our managers aside, and deal with it discreetly. I'd tell them I want to remain anonymous and ask them to recruit others to gather their things before escorting them off the property. Whether they're my friend or not, I'd want them to be treated with dignity. Regarding any other actions, I would follow the company's policy accordingly. The last time I encountered this, the employee was asked to return the product and was fired. We also Eighty-Sixed them from all our stores and mailed their paycheck to their address. I'm a pretty good judge of character, so, luckily, I haven't faced this situation. I'd hate to lose a friend over something like this."

35. A work friend is running late and may be fired if they don't clock in on time. They call and ask you to clock in for them. What do you say?
What You Need to Know
This question tests your integrity based on your approach and logic in facing this situation. It also tests your sensibilities towards the big picture, teamwork, and communication skills. One way to exhibit strong interpersonal skills is to address the big picture view, exemplifying how you tried to encourage your teammate to make the right decision and approach their situation with integrity.
Written by Kevin Downey on July 31st, 2022
Answer Example
"I would probably express disappointment in my work friend for asking them to compromise my job and my integrity to cover their tracks. I'd probably tell them that I trusted them to never ask me such a thing and that I can't trust them to not ask me again. I'd tell them that I am responsible for my actions just as they are for theirs. I'd wish them luck in getting to work on time and not getting fired. I would tell them to reconsider their course of action and that as long as they don't ask anyone else to clock in for them, I might not inform management. I'd then tell them that the fate of our friendship is up to them at that point."
