Why are you looking for a job?
Your interviewer is asking this question to understand the circumstances of your departure from your previous role. Primarily, they want to know more about the nature of your relationship with your former employer, and whether it was amicable or not. Secondly, they're interested in whether you left voluntarily, were laid off, or were terminated, which could reveal not only your circumstances but your planning and foresight. Lastly, they are curious whether your reasons for leaving were career-centric, as well as your pursuit of this opportunity. As they state on their website, "Grow your career! Driving growth through collaboration, we provide you the training, education, and resources you need to drive your career. Grow with us!"
"I am passively looking for a new opportunity that will offer continued education and growth opportunities. I decided to look for other jobs because I have already been promoted twice and there is no more room for growth. This position at E. &. J. Gallo Winery, Inc. will give me more experience as a manager and help me to cultivate my leadership skills."
"After a company restructuring, my position was eliminated. I am using this opportunity to explore new career paths that are more aligned with my skills and interests."
When contextualizing your answer, it is important to focus on the positive aspects of your experience while being honest and sincere. If you were laid off, be honest about that, while avoiding criticizing your former employer or colleagues. However, you can still focus on the positive by saying that you are looking forward to new challenges and opportunities by trying to reframe your situation in a positive light with a growth mindset.
"While my previous role did not align with my long-term career goals, I am still grateful for the experience and knowledge I gained during my time there and am eager to further build my career with the right company."
"I decided to leave my previous position to pursue a career path that is more in line with my long-term goals and aspirations."
"I took time off to help my spouse with their business while I raised our child. Now that I've accomplished the goals I set out to accomplish with our business and launched our child into preschool, I'm ready to reenter the workforce and get back into the game."
