How do you go about building relationships at work?
The interviewer wants to know your approach to building relationships with team members and earning their trust. They're also interested in your strategy for cultivating and maintaining positive relationships with their distributors and customers as a company representative. How you answer this question will help them determine how invested you are in this opportunity and whether you potentially see it as a long-term fit.
"At first, I passively introduce myself to each member of the team I am entering. I do the same with any pre-existing clientele. To a certain level, I keep my head down and showcase a strong work ethic, and that I will reliably contribute to the team. Then, as I am learning, I lean on my team for their insights, approaching my learning with humility, and giving everyone a voice. This helps me learn what I can expect from each teammate, and more often than not, their insights are incredibly valuable. Beyond that, I try to make friends with everyone I work with, and occasionally invite them to join me for lunch."
Most businesses are interested in hiring candidates who are likely to approach their first days as a new employee with humility and an eagerness to learn and build strong working relationships. Stephanie Gallo, the Chief Marketing Officer, is quoted as saying, "Through our wines and spirits, we connect with people across communities, cultures, and continents, from our employees to our consumers and all the partners in between. Empathy, curiosity, and learning agility are critical skill sets if you want to be successful. We embrace and celebrate the characteristics and experiences of each person. Empathy is absolutely critical. Every person is unique, just like every vineyard, every grape and every bottle of wine is unique."
