"If a school board member were contacted directly by a parent, I would expect that board member to listen to the parent, then encourage them to talk to the school principal. If the principal could not handle the situation, they would bring it to me. If it were a matter to be discussed at a board meeting, I would do so. It's important that our community of parents is heard, but we also need to allow our staff and leadership to be involved in the resolution process. We have to keep our teachers and principals empowered."

It is very important to listen to the parent and ultimately guide the parent back to the school principal. School board members have policies and a code of ethics, just as I do as the superintendent. Using the resolution process and starting informally at the lowest level of where the misunderstanding occurred is best for making sure our principals feel supported and have the autonomy to correct any perceived or real issues. The parent could come to me if he feels he did not get attention or satisfaction from the principal's interactions.

Listen to the parents, encourage them to call their building principal. Then If we can't find a solution I will visit with them and bring it to the board if necessary.
