"In the context of networking technology, a socket is an endpoint of two-way communication over the network. The socket is bound to a port number, enabling the TCP layer to determine where to send the data packet. The socket is identified by an IP address and a port number. There are three types of sockets used in networks. They are a stream socket, which allows processes to communicate using TC, Datagram sockets which used UDP to communicate, and raw sockets which use ICMP communication protocols."
