"There are five basic types of firewalls. These are a packet filtering firewall, circuit-level gateway, application-level gateway, known as a proxy firewall, a stateful inspection firewall, and the next-generation firewall. Of these, I prefer the next-generation firewall or NGFW. This incorporates all the technology and security features of the other four firewalls, is easier to manage, and can address evolving security threats. They have also been designed with upgrade paths which will enable them to take advantage of future developments in firewall technology and threat prevention."
