Most network engineers will have a basic knowledge about a variety of technologies used within their profession. However, only senior network engineers will know how to take this technology to the next level. Using a VPN is common among network engineers and even knowledgeable users. However, bridging VPNs is an advanced technology that only the most skilled network engineers will use. The interviewer is asking this question to differentiate your skills from those of an entry or mid-level engineer.

"The purpose of a VPN is to connect a remote computer to the main computer on the company's network. The VPN acts as a tunnel and masks the computer's IP address, providing secure access to the main computer so they can communicate securely. The main computer then provides access to other company resources to the remote computer. A VPN bridge connects a remote computer directly to the office network with the use of the internet. The remote computer appears as though it is directly connected to the main company network and has access to all the other nodes, resources, and files across the network that it is authorized for. A VPN bridge is more expensive and reduces the network bandwidth but can be more useful in certain circumstances."
