"One of my key responsibilities as a senior network engineer is to help minimize the cost of operating the network. I look at each component of cost, including personnel, equipment, power, and cooling. There are several ways you can reduce the watts per bit in a network. The primary one has to look at how many devices remain on even when not in use. This is a key cost that can be easily reduced through the use of a SmartNIC. These devices sense when a computer or other device is no longer used and put it into sleep mode. When another device is trying to access the node, the NIC senses it automatically establishes a connection with the device and puts it back in full power mode. Another technology you can use is adaptive link rates. Both of these are easy to implement and will have a significant impact on the costs of managing the network."
