"There are several different routing protocols. However, they all perform three basic functions. The first is discovery, which identifies other routers on the network. Next, it manages routing destinations and pathways. The final function is to determine where to send the data packets and the most effective route to send them by. Different routing protocols add additional features to these three basic functions such as preconfiguring links to increase the efficiency of the network."
