Question 2 of 30

Tell me about the last time you undertook a project that demanded a lot of initiative.

"After years of having done this job, I'm comfortable taking the initiative when it is appropriate. I determine if my actions will help move a project forward and comply with any company guidelines I'm expected to follow. An example of this is when the network development team was having an issue with one of the designs we created. Rather than waiting to be consulted, I contacted the team leader to discuss the issue. We collaborated to develop a solution which resolved it, and the team was able to move forward more quickly than if we had waited for a formal review process."

Why the Interviewer Asks This Question

Employers prefer to hire individuals who are willing to take the initiative. Doing this requires a balance between following organizational processes and procedures and knowing when it is appropriate to take action that either lies outside of these or has not been approved by your supervisor. Interviewers expect you to provide an example that shows you're able to exercise sound judgment and take the initiative to move a project forward.
