Are you proficient or fluent in any second languages? If so, what are they?

Mention any languages that you speak proficiently or fluently. Talk about how long you have spoken these languages, in what capacity, and how knowing these languages improved communication with co-workers, clients, donors, and partners.

"In my work as a case manager assisting refugees and asylum-seekers, I primarily interacted with Spanish-speaking clients who were looking for assistance with complex housing and employment issues. Because I minored in Spanish in college and had the opportunity to work abroad in Mexico for three years, I am fluent in Spanish. This skill not only made it easier to communicate with the clients, but it made them feel more comfortable in a stressful situation."

"Although I am not fluent in any second language, I consider myself proficient in Portuguese, German, and Afrikaans. Language learning is a hobby I'm very passionate about, and I use the Duolingo application every day to maintain and improve my abilities. In my experience volunteering at an orphanage in South Africa, I have seen how communicating with someone in their native language breaks down barriers and helps establish lasting connections."
