This is a question aimed at evaluating your ambition, your resourcefulness, and your communication skills. Explain how you communicated your inexperience with transparency and how you navigated this terrain. Describe the outcome and what you learned. As T-Mobile advertises in its recruiting efforts, "We're offering the training, support, and career opportunities that put your skills and experience to work changing the wireless industry." Share how you willingly stepped outside of your comfort zone with the ambition to advance your skills. Then describe how your outcome positively benefitted the team.
"When my manager went on unexpected medical leave for three months last year, I was asked to step into her position in the interim. I knew the basics of her role but was certainly not trained in its specifics. I was able to take it on successfully by leaning on my team, reading a lot of company manuals, and asking many questions. Once my manager returned, she was pleased with the progress that I made, and I was awarded a promotion."
"I am often asked to perform tasks outside of my wheelhouse. I believe that if we don't take on more than we feel prepared for, we'll never learn. I've stretched in my current role to take on customer dispute resolution, which was difficult for me at first since I'm naturally conflict-averse. But with good training and encouragement from my supervisor, I've been able to help find solutions for our customers in uncomfortable situations."
