Most job descriptions will have a long list of requirements. Hiring managers are aware that finding a candidate that checks ALL of the boxes, can sometimes be impossible. Your Lockheed Martin interviewer is aware of the gaps between your resume and the job description and they want to know how you plan to bridge them.

"I realized when I applied that I was lacking experience in XYZ, but I went ahead and applied because my skills and experience exceed the requirements in several other areas. Since the time of my application, I have read two books on the subject and I have watched educational videos as well. I haven't yet had the opportunity to put what I have learned to use in the field, but I am confident that I will be able to come up to speed fully in a reasonable amount of time. I look forward to the opportunity to work with this new skill set if hired."

"I would be happy to clarify my experience in XYZ skill. I do not currently have it highlighted on my resume because my experience is minimal. However, I am generally familiar with the subject and I would love the opportunity to learn more here at Lockheed Martin if hired. I learn quickly with minimal guidance and I know I will be able to fill the gap and put what I learn to use within a short amount of time. In the meantime, are there any educational materials you recommended so that I can further my knowledge in this area on my own?"

If you are missing some of the "nice to have" or even the "must have" skills listed in the job description, do not fret! For each gap, develop a plan to address the issue that you can share with your interviewer in the event questions arise. The goal is to demonstrate that you are fully aware of the gap, have a plan, and if possible, are proactively taking steps to address it. Consider strategies such as research, classes, putting in extra hours, shadowing, or working with a mentor.

Nice! This is a great response. Is there an example you can include here as well about a time when you adapted quickly or learned something new? This would further strengthen your answer.
