Efficiency on the job will differ greatly depending on your line of work, but your interviewer will be looking to hear that you understand how you can be efficient in the job you are interviewing for and that you understand why it is important. In the end, efficiency comes down to working smarter rather than harder. In your answer, point out ways that you can wisely save time in your job without taking shortcuts. Explain how you use technology and other resources to stay organized and on-task along with other things that you do in your work.

"As a sales rep that spends the majority of my days on the road, staying organized and planning ahead are key to me being efficient in my work. I utilize Microsoft Outlook to keep my calendar up to date with client meetings, scheduled sales calls and company meetings. I also use the task organizer to keep a running to do list. Every Friday afternoon, I map out my travel plans for the following week to be as efficient as possible when it comes to miles traveled. If I have a scheduled sales call in a certain area, I try to pre-plan other meetings or cold calls in that same area while I'm in town."

"Multi-tasking and being a part of several projects at one time as a Financial Analyst requires a great amount of planning and detail to be as efficient as possible on the job. In my work, I continuously look for ways to be efficient. I have had all of the reports that I need automated so that I don't have to request them on a weekly, monthly or yearly basis. They are now automatically emailed to me at the intervals that I requested. I have templated all of the reporting I have customized and send out to various leaders in my organization and this has saved a ton of time and kept the colleagues that I report to very satisfied."

"When I was in college, I found several ways to be more efficient at organizing my time and priorities. I would determine which project required my attention by the number of hours it would take to complete and the deadline to complete it. I utilized a planner and a task organizer in Microsoft, and each week I created a dashboard of my tasks and priorities with color coding to help me stay on track. I frequently blocked time on my calendar for "distraction-free" periods where I closed out my email and put my phone away to allow focus time to complete tasks and projects."
