"As an assistant manager at the cafe, we had a gift card incentive program for our staff. However, the expenses for these incentives were coming from the manager's expense account, which was exceeding our budgetary limits. I decided, even though the incentives seemed to motivate staff to overperform, they were detracting from our big-picture goals. So instead of allowing for the perks, we were distributing via gift cards, that we'd do a BBQ party at the end of the month instead of the gift cards. These incentivized our staff just as well and cost only a fraction from the manager's expense account."
